Swim Safe

Swimming in reservoirs is dangerous and can kill. While they may look like a tempting place to take a swim when the sun is shining, there are lots of hidden dangers that put your life at risk if you go in the water. At Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, we want to make sure that you stay safe when you visit our reservoir sites this summer.

So what are the dangers you ask?

Very cold water for a start – much colder than the sea or a river. Water in reservoirs is so cold that it causes cold-water shock which can immobilise your arms and legs so you won’t be able to move them to stay afloat. It can also cause hypothermia which can kill.

And it’s not just the cold water that you should worry about. Reservoirs are big storage tanks for water which have equipment under the surface which sucks the water to the treatment works. If you are in the water when the equipment starts, you will be dragged deep below the surface.

So this summer remember - swimming in reservoirs can kill. Stay out. Stay alive.
