Run through the heart of Scotland... And run through history #COMEHOMETORUN
Elite distance running in Scotland is on an upward trajectory and the Stirling Scottish Marathon as part of the Great Run British Marathon Series is a welcome new addition.
Supported by Scottish Athletics and Stirling Council, the Scotland event will take place on May 21, 2017 and held in the spectacular and historic setting of Stirlingshire. Starting out with an undulating first five miles, the remainder of the course is set to be fast and suitable for all abilities and will provide an awe-inspiring experience for accomplished and first- time marathoners alike.
With the legendary Liz McColgan and Zola Budd already signed up to take part, you will be rubbing shoulders with Olympic royalty, too. Liz of course needs no introduction to Scotland! As a former 10,000m World Champion, double Commonwealth Champion, and Olympic silver medallist – not to mention winner of the New York, Tokyo and London Marathons – her place as a UK athletics great is assured. Her marathon best of 2:26:52 in 1997 still stands as a Scottish record.
Zola Budd is known as one of the trailblazers for women in sport, particularly in running. She rose to fame in 1984, at the age of 17, when she broke the women's 5000m world record with a time of 15:01.83. She was, of course, part of the infamous race at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles that has recently been retold on the documentary “The Fall”. However, more importantly Zola also has a superb list of record-breaking achievements to her name.
Whether you want to challenge yourself, be a source of inspiration to others, or simply embrace love of running, the high of crossing the Stirling Scottish Marathon finish line is a feeling you will want to experience.
