Yasmin Finney is transgender. Opening up about the importance of positive trans representation in Heartstopper, Yasmin said: “It really, really, really is such a rare story that we get a trans character that doesn’t delve into gender dysphoria, or depression, or bullying, but just the positive… Just everything that is natural about being trans is highlighted, and I’m just so happy to be that positive representation that we’ve needed for so many years." Yasmin Finney plays Elle Argent in Netflix’s Heartstopper. While Elle is trans in the show, the series does not make her trans identity a plot point – something that Yasmin calls refreshing and rare. “It’s so beautiful to see a trans story on television that's normalised, rather than see a narrative focused on gender dysphoria, bullying, or the dark parts that comes with being a trans person,” Yasmin told Elle. Yasmin won the role after attending an open casting call. [Netflix]
Believe it or not, Heartstopper is Yasmin’s very first major on-screen role! Prior to appearing in the Netflix show, Yasmin predominantly acted on stage in various local productions. Following her Heartstopper success, Yasmin is next set to appear in Doctor Who as Rose alongside Ncuti Gatwa. Yasmin was also meant to play the lead in Billy Porter’s upcoming drama, ‘What If?’, but had to pull out due to COVID restrictions. [@yazdemand via Instagram]
Yasmin Finney is now a Doctor Who STAR, baby! It was announced in May 2022 that the Heartstopper actress would be joining the cast, for the 60th anniversary series, as Rose Noble. Rose is the daughter of Donna Noble and Shaun Temple. She made her first appearance in 2023's 60th Anniversary special episodes. Yasmin previously confirmed that her character Rose is also trans. Yasmin Finney started TikTok back in 2019, where she began documenting her trans journey.
