Who died in Game of Thrones? Every death in season 8 so far

The death count of Game of Thrones season 8 is already out of control and it's showing no signs of stopping.

This is it. The final season. Game of Thrones season 8 is finally here and death is coming.

Ever since it was announced that season 8 would be the final season, fans have been wondering who will die in the last few episodes and who will survive until the end.

Will Daenerys and her dragons take the Iron Throne? Will Jon Snow fulfil the destiny of his true name? Will the Starks come out on top?

Well... there have already been several surprise deaths and plot-twists so far and by the looks of things, they're only going to get even more shocking.

EPISODE 5 - 'The Bells'

Varys

Master manipulator, Lord Varys, was sentenced to death by Daenerys Targaryen, after he turned against the Queen.

Sansa tipped Tyrion off about Jon Snow's true lineage, which makes his claim to the Iron Throne stronger. Tyrion then shared this knowledge with Varys in episode 4, which firmed up his doubts in the Mother of Dragon.

As we saw in the penultimate instalment of Game of Thrones, Varys was writing a letter to someone about Jon Snow's true identity, and also shared his concerns about Dany becoming the Mad Queen (and he was right, tbf).

Before Dany let rip of Cersi and King's Landing, however, she burnt Lord Varys to a crisp in front of Jon, Tyrion and the others, using it as a warning to anyone else who betrayed her trust. Yikes!

Euron Greyjoy

Euron has been a bit of a thorn in Jaime Lannister's side since he rocked up to King's Landing last season.

The pirate has not only wreaked havoc on his family (he was a complete arse toward Theon and his niece Yara), but also muscled his way in with Cersei, who used him for his Iron Fleet.

It made sense that Jaime and Euron had a showdown, then, as they fought over Cersei.

After a bit of a struggle and a roll in the sane, Jaime managed to kill Euron with his sword, before heading off to find his queen.

Sandor Clegane, aka, The Hound & Ser Gregor, aka, The Mountain

In one of the most epic Game of Thrones death scenes we've seen to date, The Hound took on his older brother at King's Landing. Taking out a lifetime of hatred on his sibling, The Hound started flailing his sword about and slashing Ser Gregor left, right and centre.

A zombified Ser Gregor, who was Cersei's bodyguard and lapdog, ignored his queen's commands in order to fight. As he did so, Qyburn stepped in to defend Cersei, but was smashed to a pulp as The Mountain tossed him aside.

After many seasons, we got to see what was going on under that helmet - and it wasn't pretty! Then Ser Gregor started to gauge his little brother's eyes out (very reminiscent of Oberyn's death in season 4), before The Hound recovered enough to drive a dagger through The Mountain's skull.

Sandor then pushes Gregor off the stairwell of the Red Keep and they both fall into a pit of flames.

Qyburn

As mentioned, Cersei's hand and trusted advisor, Qyburn, suffered a pretty gruesome death at the hand of Ser Gregor the Great.

Qyburn stood up for Cersei and demanded The Mountain listen to orders, but as he approached him, Ser Gregor batted him away, sending him flying into a tonne of rocks and crushing his skull. Ouch.

As Qyburn kinda made The Mountain (or, at least, brought him back as a zombie), it was a little Frankenstein-esque.

Cersei Lannister & Jaime Lannister

Now, we're going to include this one, but it wasn't exactly satisfying.

Cersei has long been the queen of our hearts, and we cannot accept that she went down in such a placid way.

First, she rang the bells to call a truce between her and Dany (which was ignored), then she cries multiple times as she scurries about the Red Keep, looking to escape.

Then Qyburn is killed and The Mountain disobeys her, leaving Cersei by herself.

Finally, her brother Jaime manages to get his way into King's Landing, just in time to find Cersei in THAT map room.

The pair hurry down to the underground passages, in order to escape in the boat Ser Jaime arrived in. Only when they arrive, they find the exit has been blocked off with rubble.

The twins then huddle together in a tight embrace, as the walls of the Red Keep come crashing down on them both.

EPISODE 4 - 'The Last of the Starks'

Missandei

After being attacked by the Greyjoy fleet, Missandei is captured and brought to Cersei. She's then beheaded after a failed attempt at talking Cersei down. The Mountain swings and she falls off the walls of the castle, where Grey Worm, Dany and Tyrion are all standing.

Rhaegal

Daenerys, her team and her army all leave Winterfell to approach Cersei in the south, which is a huge mistake. As they're sailing ahead, Rhaegal and Drogon, with Dany mounted, fly above the fleet. Out of nowhere, three arrows strike Rhaegal, taking him down almost immediately. He falls from the sky and plummets into the sea. The arrows were shot by Euron Greyjoy's fleet. He proceeds to fire several at Drogon but misses them all. Two dragons down, one to go...

EPISODE 3 - 'The Long Night'

Melisandre

Melisandre said that she would be the dead before dawn after the Battle of Winterfell and she kept her promise. She was key to protecting Winterfell (she lit the trenches around Winterfell after Dany and Jon failed to and reminded Arya of her prophecy). At the end of the battle, she removed her magical necklace and died as her body reverted to its actual age.

The Night King

You already know this but Arya Stark really did the damn thing in episode 3. It truly looked as though the Night King would win the battle but before he had a chance to kill Bran, Arya stopped him. Pouncing on him from behind, the Night King then turned and grabbed Arya by the neck. Arya dropped her sword but caught it in her other hand and stabbed the Night King. In doing so, she killed all of the white walkers and proved once more that she is the baddest bitch in all of Westeros.

Theon Greyjoy

Theon acted as Bran's key defender throughout the Battle of Winterfell. His final actions saw him run towards the Night King in an attempt to stab him to death. However, the Night King managed to stop him in the process. Before Theon ran to his death, Bran told him: "You're a good man". BRB crying for eternity.

Ser Jorah Mormont

It was fate that Ser Jorah would die defending his Khaleesi Daenerys. Stuck outside Winterfell, the two of them fought off white walkers in unison. However, Ser Jorah didn't make it out alive. After the wights were all killed following the Night King's death, Jorah dropped down dead on the battle field and died in Dany's arms, as Drogon came to mourn him.

Beric Dondarrion

When Thrones first started, Beric was sent out by Ned Stark to apprehend Gregor Clegane (aka The Mountain). He ended up forming the Brotherhood without Banners and later dies, before coming back to life. This time, he died for real. Amid the chaos of the Battle of Winterfell, Arya loses her weapons. Beric dies sustaining an injury, while shielding Arya from the white walkers. If it weren't for Beric, Arya may never have conquered the Night King.

Lady Lyanna Mormont

A giant white walker crushed Lyanna Mormont to death during the Battle of Winterfell. Ever the legend though, she also took him out at the same time by stabbing him in the eye. RIP to a hero, an icon, a star.

Eddison Tollett

A brother of the Night's Watch who's been here since season 1. During the Battle of Winterfell, Edd saves Samwell Tarly but is stabbed by a white walker mere moments later.

EPISODE 2 - 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms'

There were NO deaths in episode. None. None at all. Unless you count the death of Arya's virginity. Well hello, let's celebrate that!

EPISODE 1 - 'Winterfell'

Lord Ned Umber

Lord Ned Umber was the son of Smalljon Umber and the head of the House of Umber, who have support the House of Stark in every season of Game of Thrones. In season 8 episode 1, Beric and Tormund find Ned dead at Last Hearth, pinned to a wall by White Walkers. He re-animates as a Wight Walker in front of them but Beric torches him before he can harm anyone.
