Umbrella Academy confirms Elliot Page will still play Vanya after coming out as trans

The Umbrella Academy reportedly has no plans to change Vanya's gender in the show and Elliot Page will continue playing her in season 3 and beyond.

Netflix and the team behind The Umbrella Academy have confirmed that Elliot Page will continue to play Vanya Hargreeves in the series.

Yesterday (Dec 1), Elliot Page publicly came out as trans. The actor, best known for his roles in Juno, X-Men and The Umbrella Academy, took to Twitter to make a statement. He wrote: "Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life."

Elliot also wrote in-depth about the ways in which trans people are still discriminated against today, in particular Black and Latinx trans women. In response, family, friends and fans were quick to show Elliot their solidarity and support, and now Netflix have revealed that Elliot's coming out will not affect his role in The Umbrella Academy in any way at all.

Following Elliot's statement, Variety reported that he will continue to star as Vanya Hargreeves in the superhero series. Fans of the hit show will already know that Vanya is a cisgender woman who has the ability to absorb sound and convert it into powerful energy. Variety states that insiders have told them that "there are no plans to change the character’s gender".

Among the people who congratulated Elliot on coming out, were Elliot's Umbrella Academy castmates. Justin H. Min, who plays Ben in the series, wrote: "welcome to the fam, elliot" and David Casteñeda, who plays Diego added: "yes".

Netflix also tweeted: "So proud of our superhero! WE LOVE YOU ELLIOT! Can't wait to see you return in season 3!"

We can't wait to see Elliot in The Umbrella Academy season 3 either!
