Director Ryan Murphy is bringing 'The Prom' musical from Broadway straight to Netflix with an all-star cast. Here's who's in it.
When Ryan Murphy announced that he would be adapting hit Broadway musical The Prom into a film for Netflix, you just knew there would be a star-studded line-up taking part. From Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman to James Corden and Keegan-Michael Key, here's all the stars in the film. [Getty]
Meryl Streep plays Dee Dee Allen, a two-time Tony winner and Broadway star who ends up flatlining her own career after starring in a flop show with Barry Glickman (James Corden). As we all know, Meryl's kind of a big deal. She's had an acting career spanning decades and has also starred in a number of musicals before, including Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again (as Donna Sheridan herself) and Into The Woods (as The Witch). James Corden plays Barry Glickman, Dee Dee Allen's (Streep) partner in a flop musical about Eleanor Roosevelt. After terrible reviews, Barry and Dee Dee go on a mission to get their careers off of the ground again with the help of some Broadway stars. Of course, you'll know James from The Late Late Show with James Corden, but he's also had a number of previous musical roles including Into The Woods and ummm, 2019's Cats. [Getty]
Nicole Kidman plays Angie Dickinson, a Broadway veteran and friend of Trent Oliver, Dee Dee Allen and Barry Glickman. Nicole is a Hollywood legend and has also starred in two other musicals before. There's 2001's Moulin Rouge! (where she played Satine, obviously) and 2009's Nine, where she played the role of Claudia. [Getty]
Andrew Rannells plays Trent Oliver, an actor and friend of Barry Glickman and Dee Dee Allen, who gets on board with their idea to kickstart their flop careers again. You'll recognise Andrew from the 2018 movie 'A Simple Favor', and the TV shows 'Girls' and 'The New Normal'. Rannells is also a Tony-nominated Broadway star himself, having starred in The Book of Mormon (as Elder Price), Hamilton (as King George III), Hedwig and the Angry Inch (as Hedwig) and The Boys In The Band (as Larry). Keegan-Michael Key plays Tom Hawkins, the Principal of the Indiana high school that won't allow Emma Nolan to attend prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa Greene. He is also the love interest of Dee Dee Allen. You might recognise Keegan-Michael from his iconic sketch show alongside Jordan Peele, 'Key & Peele'. More recently, he’s also starred in Toy Story 4, The Lion King and Pitch Perfect 2. [Getty]
Ariana DeBose plays Alyssa Greene, Emma Nolan’s girlfriend and date to the prom. Ariana is a Broadway star in her own right. She’s most well known for playing the role of the Bullet in Hamilton, and also played Mary Wilson in Motown and appeared in Pippin. In 2021, she will play Anita in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story. [PA Images]
Kerry Washington plays Mrs. Greene, Alyssa’s mother and head of the PTA who bans Emma from attending prom with Alyssa as her date. TV fans will immediately know Kerry as the iconic Olivia Pope from ABC’s Scandal. [PA Images]
Emma Nolan is a high school senior in Indiana, who ends up having her prom cancelled when she tries to take her girlfriend. After a nationwide search, newcomer Joe Ellen Pellman will take on the role.
Jo Ellen Pellman will play Emma Nolan in The Prom on Netflix. Jo Ellen was found after a nation-wide hunt for an actress to play the role. Jo Ellen is pretty much a newcomer, having appeared in one episode of The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel as Girl #2 and in one episode of The Deuce, as Bree. [Netflix]
Ariana Grande was originally meant to play the role of Alyssa Greene, daughter of the head of the PTA and Emma Nolan's secret girlfriend. However, according to reports from Billboard, Ariana dropped out because of a scheduling conflict as she was on tour at the time of filming. [Getty]
Awkwafina was originally cast to play Ms Sheldon, the actors' publicist but the actress has to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts. [Getty]
