Why was Supernatural cancelled? Well, looks like we finally have our answer thanks to Jensen and Jared.
Ever since it was announced that Supernatural would be ending after 15 seasons, fans have been wondering what the reason behind the decision was.
It was announced on March 22 that season 15 of Supernatural (airing in at some point in 2019) would be the last. Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins confirmed the news in an emotional video shared on social media, thanking fans for their support.
"We just told the crew that though we're very, very excited about moving into our 15th season, it will be our last," Ackles said in the video message. "15 years of a show that has certainly changed my life, I know it's changed these two guys' lives and we just wanted you to hear from us that though we're excited about next year, it will be the finale. The big grand finale of an institution."
At the time, no explanation was given as to why the show was cancelled but after a panel at VegasCon this weekend, the cast finally explained why.
Taking to the stage for a panel about the show, the Winchester boiz Ackles and Padalecki addressed the decision. “This was a community decision,” Padalecki said. He also pointed out that neither the decision wasn't forced by the network or the studio.
Ackles followed that up by saying: “It wasn’t an easy decision. It was months and months, if not years, of discussion between he and I, between the rest of the cast, between the crew, between our writers, between our producers, between the studio, between the network. Nobody wanted to see this show fizzle out.
You can listen to their comments around the 28 minute mark in the video below.

"I think that it was everyone wanting to do the biggest service to the show that we could by going out strong. It just seemed like the writing was kind of on the wall as to when that was happening. Everybody kind of felt that it was coming soon, and so it was just taking that leap of faith of going like, ‘Well guys, let’s get out the paint and paint that finish line because what we’ve accomplished is unlike any other.'”
So there you have it. Better to go out strong than be cancelled out of the blue, right? Thankfully, the cast will have the chance to finish out the story on their terms and they'll get a fitting finale. Season 15 won't be shortened either. It will still get a 20-episode run, just like season 14.
Following the news, legend Misha Collins also wrote a heartfelt letter to the SPN family, thanking them for their years of support. Read the full thing below and um, try not to cry.
