"We just told the crew that though we're very, very excited about moving into our 15th season, it will be our last."
We never thought this day would come - Supernatural is officially ending after season 15.
In an emotional video shared by Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins, the trio confirmed to the fans that season 15 would be Supernatural's last.
"We just told the crew that though we're very, very excited about moving into our 15th season, it will be our last," Ackles said in the video message.
"15 years of a show that has certainly changed my life, I know it's changed these two guys' lives and we just wanted you to hear from us that though we're excited about next year, it will be the finale. The big grand finale of an institution."
So far, no exact reason has been given as to why the decision to end the show was made.
In a joint statement from executive producers Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb, they said: “Firstly, we would like to thank all the people who have been involved with the show both in front of and behind the camera. For us it has been an experience of a lifetime. The support we have had from both Warner Bros Television and The CW has been incredible. We'd like to give special thanks to Jensen, Jared and Misha for making this journey so special. It is now most important to us to give these characters that we love the sendoff they deserve."
While it's undoubtably sad news for the Supernatural family, the good news is that season 15 won't be shortened. It will still get a 20-episode run, just like season 14. That means there'll be no rushed storylines and the writers - and actors - can work towards a fitting and moving series finale for the beloved characters.
All good things must come to an end, right? Or as Jensen Ackles put it, "nothing ever really ends in Supernatural...does it?"
