The new season started filming today (April 23)
Today (April 23), the third season of Stranger Things finally started filming. To confirm the exciting news Millie Bobbie Brown posted a photo of herself with producer Shawn Levy on set with the caption “and so it begins”. She’s seen sporting a longish bob, a far cry from her shaved head as she settles into life as a normal schoolgirl called “Jane” rather than Eleven.
Speaking to Collider about the process when he revealed that filming would start today, Levy recently said that this season "is the same number of scripts as last year. The rest of them kind of get written as we shoot, as we edit, as we go. I’m once again directing the third and fourth episodes so that I can give the Duffers a breather, and send them back into the writing cave, so that they can buff out the rest of the season".
While this news has fans excited, it’s unclear when we’ll actually get to see it. It’s reportedly coming in late 2018 or early 2019, with star David Harbour telling Variety previously that it could be a little later than we’d usually expect.
He said, “You probably won’t get season 3 until sometime in 2019. But also part of the things is, like any good thing, they need time”. I think we can all make allowances for a wait if it means the season will be perfect, but hopefully we’ll at least get a trailer soon!
This season is shaping up to be the most exciting one yet, with all of your favourite characters returning and a few new ones being introduced.
Will is reportedly having a “break” from going through hell this season, but while the threat from the upside down has mostly been contained, it’s unlikely things will stay chill in Hawkins for long. The season also takes place after the second season, with a year time jump in order to keep up with the real ages of the ever-growing kid actors. That means that everything will be kicking off in 1985, so naturally, Back to the Future will be a major reference point for all the throwbacks this season.
Fans tend to be impatient about these things, but it looks like they’ll be waiting a little while longer. It took 9 months to film the second season of Stranger Things, so it’s likely that this shoot will continue into later this year, with the whole thing dropping later.
However, it does look like we might get more Stranger Things than we were expecting to – while the Duffer Brothers had previously said it could end at four seasons, producer Shawn Levy recently said that "season four is definitely happening. There’s very much the possibility of a season beyond that one, that’s currently undecided". Hopefully Millie Bobbie Brown’s photo is just the first of a load of teasers the cast and crew will bring us to tide us over until we finally get to go back to Hawkins.
