'Stranger Things' almost killed these two fan favourites in season one

Now, this would have changed the vibe of the entire show.

Stranger Things won't return until 2019, but that hasn't stopped fans from wondering what new journeys their favourite Hawkins residents will embark on come Stranger Things 3.

Season 2 gave us the tragic death of Bob Newby, and now the Duffer brothers have revealed that our hearts were supposed to be broken by two huge character deaths in season 1.

In a new Stranger Things behind-the-scenes book, Stranger Things: Worlds Turned Upside Down, the famous directing duo opened up about the two huge audience favourites they almost killed in season 1.

In the book, Ross Duffer revealed that Eleven was originally going to die saving her friends. "Eleven was going to sacrifice herself to save the day," he explained.

Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown, is actually one of the most integral characters in the Stranger Things story. Season two focused heavily on her journey to find out more about her origins and powers.

After realising that the show could go on for longer than one season, they knew that Eleven had to stay.

"And at that point, we knew how special Millie was. If there was going to be more Stranger Things, Eleven had to come back.”

She wasn't the only one who was on the chopping block in the very beginning, though. Steve "Dad" Harrington almost didn't live long enough to become the beloved babysitter fans knew in season 2.

"This Steve character, he was just supposed to be this giant douchebag," they explained. Despite their initial plans, Joe Keery's performance impressed them so much, they couldn't say goodbye to Steve. "We fell in love with Joe."

So did we!

Of course, big character deaths are par for the course in television writing. Stranger Things, which gave us the tragic deaths of Barb and Bob, has never been a show full of rainbows and butterflies.

In fact, in teasing season 3, the brothers have also hinted that it will be the "grossest" season to date. We! Can't! Wait!
