The game never stops... Netflix' Squid Game season is coming out in 2024 - but when's the release date, who's in the cast, and what will happen? Here is all the latest news.

It didn't take long for mania to surround the viral hit that was Squid Game – upon its release in September 2021 it was nearly impossible to scroll online without seeing post after post about the thrilling show!

Netflix’s Korean thriller quickly skyrocketed to the streaming platform's prime spot, with fans soon asking: “Will there be a second series?” And we can finally say for sure that there will be – and it's coming out in 2024!

Squid Game was renewed for season two shortly after its first season's success, even sparking a spin-off in the form of a reality show; Squid Game: The Challenge.

Now not only has the main actor Lee Jung-jae spilled that Squid Game season two will come out in December this year, but Osen has revealed that production has finished filming season 2 and season 3 at the same time!

Here’s everything we know about season 2 of Squid Game, including the release date and trailer.

When is Squid Game season 2 coming out?

Squid Game season 2 is coming out on 26th December 2024. Three months before it is set to hit Netflix they shared a brand new trailer with the caption: 'The game never stops Are you ready to play? Squid Game Season 2 arrives DECEMBER 26.'

Netflix also confirmed season 3, the third and final series of Squid Game, will follow in 2025. According to Osen, the actors and crew filmed seasons 2 and 3 simultaneously. It took 11 months with season two starting in July 2023 and only ending in June 2024.

Netflix has released some of their biggest TV shows over the Christmas and New Year period in the past – Squid Game season 2 may just follow suit.

What will happen in Squid Game season two?

No official plot has been announced either, but the show’s director Hwang Dong-hyuk did confirm that Seong Gi-hun, the protagonist of the first season (played by Lee Jung-jae), will make a return in season two and reprise his role.

He told the Associated Press: “I will promise you this, Gi-hun will come back. He will do something for the world.”

Lee Jung-jae also spoke to The Hollywood Reporter explaining, "I'm in constant and continuous talks with the production company about season 2, but I try not to talk to the director too much."

"Because like you said, the creative process is really intense for him, and now with the added pressure of the show's global success, I know he must be going through such a hard time."

"So I don't want to be another factor adding to the pain of the creative process, which I know so well from my own writing experience. But I have total faith that he will write a great story for season two, and I wait in anticipation with everyone else.”

The first batch of first look photos from season 2 were also released alongside the first teaser trailer.

In one photo, Gi-hun has now ditched the red hair and is sporting a new hairstyle. In another, it looks like he's encountered one of the red workers in a public place.

Elsewhere, Gi-hun comes face to face with Gong Yoo's mysterious Salesman again, who is holding a gun. A brand new photo of the Front Man was also released, as well as a picture of a brand new character holding a game card.

Is there a trailer for Squid Game season two?

Netflix dropped another teaser for Squid Game season 2 in September following two that came before. The latest teaser shows Gi-Hun, now without his red hair, being hunted down by a masked man before waking up back inside the game.

In the first teaser released earlier in 2024, Gi-hun, still with his red hair, is seen on the phone. The person on the line tells him, “You will regret your decision” and he sternly responds: “I will find you. No matter what it takes.”

It comes after the first series ended with Gi-hun turning his back on his plans to move to America, literally walking away from the aeroplane to no doubt find out more about why the games were started and who else is behind the operation.

Who is in the cast of Squid Game season 2?

Only a handful of actors from the first season will be returning for the second. The cast members returning for Squid Game season 2 are:

• Lee Jung-jae will be reprising his role as Seong Gi-hun (player 456)
• Lee Byung-hun will be reprising his role as the Front Man
• Wi Ha-joon will be returning as police detective Jun-ho
• Gong Yoo will also be coming back as the Salesman

Several brand new cast members will also be joining for the next instalment: Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Park Sung-hoon, Jo Yu-ri, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David and Lee Jin-uk.

Their character details are being kept under wraps for now!

How many episodes will there be in Squid Game season 2?

According to Osen, despite season one having nine episodes, season two of Squid Game has been forecast to have only six.

The publication reported that season three will also only have around six or seven episodes.

But before you get sad that there's less to watch, because the seasons are shorter (and finished filming), it'll probably mean that there won't be a long gap between the release of seasons two and three!
