Fans hope to honour SpongeBob Squarepants creator Stephen Hillenburg's legacy by getting the song played during the 2019 Super Bowl Halftime show.
SpongeBob Squarepants creator Stephen Hillenburg died in late November, at the age of 57, after a battle with ALS. Last week, after reports of Hillenburg's passing broke, fans shared their favourite SpongeBob memes to commemorate the prolific animator. As fans continue to reflect on Hillenburg's legacy, many have signed change.org petition calling for the iconic SpongeBob stadium anthem "Sweet Victory" to be played at the 2019 Super Bowl Halftime show.
The petition description reads "as some of you may or may not know, Stephen Hillenburg—the creator of Spongebob Sqaurepants—has passed away recently. As a tribute to his legacy, his contributions to a generation of children, and to truly showcase the greatness of this song, we call for Sweet Victory to be performed at the Halftime Show."
At present, over 565,000 people have signed a petition titled "Have “Sweet Victory” Performed at the Super Bowl". Fans have also commented on the petition page, explaining why they want the song to be performed at the massive sporting event.
"It's a hugely inspirational song that I listen to when working out and boosting confidence, but besides that I want it played at the Super Bowl to honor the man who gave us one of the greatest and most quotable cartoons of all time," wrote one fan.
"It’s a great way to honor Mr. Hillenberg after his passing," said another.
The song, which is taken from season 2 episode 15 "Band Geeks", is what SpongeBob and co perform at the "Bubble Bowl" after Squidward sets out to impress Squilliam Fancyson.
After a disastrous training for the event, Squidward is surprised when SpongeBob and the gang are able to get it together in time to wow the adoring crowd.
