Black Mirror... but make it real life.
Spooky season is almost upon us but honestly, nothing Netflix drop in October will be as disturbing and terrifying as their new film, The Social Dilemma.
The part-documentary, part-dramatisation focuses on the dangers of social media, and how the big tech companies use their apps to manipulate and control their users – psychologically and emotionally. It's like Black Mirror... but completely real.
The film features former employees from companies like Facebook, Instagram, Google and Twitter, who all spill the terrifying ways in which these apps use our internet behaviours.
And the bombshells that are dropped in the film are making people want to delete everything.

From Instagram's algorithm right down to the Google autocomplete, our behaviours on social media affect every single thing we do on our phones.
In the trailer alone, the film teases ominous statements from tech experts who say "everything they are doing online is being watched, is being tracked. Every single action you take is carefully monitored and recorded."
After watching the film, viewers are absolutely horrified to learn what goes on behind the scenes. @AndreSegers even wrote: "The Social Dilemma is the most important, informative, and terrifying documentary you'll see all year. It's on Netflix now. Watch it."

I’m watching The Social Dilemma on Netflix and having an anxiety attack. This documentary is also about 10 years too late. I think the damage is done an irreversible (I said on Twitter)

People on twitter, go watch the Social Dilemma on Netflix. The people responsible for making you addicted to social media/smart phones are trying to undo the damage and it’s fascinating to watch. This part here is why I’ve started making a point not to use my phone on the train pic.twitter.com/S5hrgTcfwD

And, of course, everyone is logging on to Twitter after watching the film to make the same damn joke.
