1. What happened to the characters at the end of 13 Reasons Why season 4?
After 4 seasons, with 49 episodes in total, 13 Reasons Why has officially come to an end. The Netflix teen drama was not without its controversies over the years, with viewers calling out the show for some of the ways it sensationalised certain issues. But for those who want to know where the characters actually ended up, here’s a recap of what happened to Clay Jensen, Jessica Davis, Justin Foley, Tyler Down and the rest of the Liberty High students… SPOILERS AHEAD!

2. What happened to Clay in 13 Reasons Why season 4?
In the final season, Clay is in therapy after struggling with his mental health. Clay experiences blackouts and, at one point, is admitted to the psychiatric ward of a hospital after stealing a gun from a police officer and waving it around. During his blackouts, he also vandalises the school and sets the principal’s car on fire. Clay breaks up with Ani, but the two remain friends. In the final scene, Clay drives off with Tony on a summer trip, before he packs up and leaves for Brown University.

3. What happened to Jessica in 13 Reasons Why season 4?
Throughout the final season, student body president Jessica finds romance with football player Diego Torres. She pursues a relationship with Justin after he returns from rehab, but he rejects her. Jessica continues working to make sure Liberty High is a safe space, with strict security measures. When the riot breaks out, she takes responsibility in order to un-cancel prom. She gets into Berkeley and considers reigniting her romance with Diego later on.

4. What happened to Tyler in 13 Reasons Why season 4?
At the start of the season, it’s revealed that Tyler has been acting as an informant for the police and will not be arrested for owning illegal guns if he helps find an illegal arms dealer. His secret causes his friends to start questioning him when they find photos of guns in his bag. During an active-shooter drill at Liberty High, Tyler gets close to Monty’s sister Estela. At the end of the season, the two are shown to be dating.

5. What happened to Tony in 13 Reasons Why season 4?
In season 4, Tony decides to pursue boxing and after a few successful fights, is offered a scholarship to University of Nevada. Despite being torn between wanting to go and wanting to stay and run his dad’s auto shop, Tony’s dad encourages him to go. Tony’s boyfriend Caleb ends up helping to run the shop. In the final scenes, Tony and Clay head off on a road-trip before leaving for their respective colleges.

6. What happened to Alex in 13 Reasons Why season 4?
Knowing he pushed Bryce causing his death, Alex feels the truth looming over him. While discovering his sexuality, Alex kisses Zach and starts dating Winston Williams after Winston begins his investigation into who really killed Bryce. Alex breaks up with him when he discovers what he’s doing. Later he tells Winston that he killed Bryce, but Winston decides drop it as he still loves Alex. Alex and Charlie St George then start dating. Alex is also cleared of Bryce’s death when the case is closed.

7. What happened to Justin in 13 Reasons Why season 4?
In episode 1, Justin arrives back from rehab and aims to stay sober, go to meetings and get healthy. However, after hearing news that his mother had died, he relapses. It’s then revealed that Justin had been HIV positive for a while, and that had now progressed into AIDS. In the final episode, Justin dies, surrounded by friends and family, after contracting pneumonia and meningitis. His funeral was the one that had been shown every episode.

8. What happened to Ani in 13 Reasons Why season 4?
At the start of the season, Ani plans to move away to be with her mother but is then offered a place to stay by Jessica. Ani and Clay break up, but then agree to be friends at the end of the season. Ani is also offered Bryce’s college fund by his mother, Nora Walker. She declines and gives the money to Liberty High’s Hands Off group instead. She heads off to college (she got into all nine that she applied for), eager to earn enough money to support her and her mother.

9. What happened to Zach in 13 Reasons Why season 4?
In season 4, Zach is shown to be on a downward spiral. He starts drinking a lot following Bryce and Monty’s deaths, and is seen to be hooking up with a lot of people. Following Justin’s death, Zach realises that he needs to get better. He is offered a job at Liberty High as a football coach but declines. Zach then goes to college to study music.

10. What happened to Winston in 13 Reasons Why season 4?
In season 4, Winston arrives at Liberty High and immediately sets out to uncover who killed Bryce, seeing as he knows that it wasn’t Monty. Throughout the episodes, Winston gets closer to the others, even entering a relationship with Alex. When his intentions become clear, Alex breaks up with him. Later, when Alex confesses that he was the one who pushed Bryce, Winston decides to drop everything because he’s in love with Alex.

11. What happened to Charlie in 13 Reasons Why season 4?
Charlie becomes part of the friendship group in season 4. Charlie and Alex strike up a relationship after spending time together during the active-shooter drill. Charlie comes out to his father and confirms that he is dating Alex. The couple are named prom kings, and Charlie is by Alex’s family’s side when they watch him graduate.
