It's time to get acquainted with your new 'Riverdale' faves...
Riverdale Season 3 is finally upon us. After months of teasing, the beloved CW teen drama returns tonight which means that, in mere hours, we're going to find out what's happened to the residents of our favourite town since Season 2 ended back in May. Last we saw, Kevin and Moose were making out (!), Cheryl was inducted into the Serpents (!!) and Archie was wrongly being arrested for the murder of Cassidy Bullock (!!!).
A lot went down and we can't wait to see what's next for Betty, Veronica and the rest of the Riverdale gang. As it stands, we have already received various clues as to what we can expect from Season 3. The Archie vs Hiram dynamic is going to be a big feature in the coming weeks, there's going to be a parent flashback episode and Falice are going to get the screen time that they deserve at last. We're ready.
Perhaps most important of all though there are going to be some major new characters.
As it stands, we already know that all our longterm faves (who are still alive, sorry Midge and not in jail, not sorry Hal) will be returning in the new season. However, show-runner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has already confirmed that there will be some new blood in Riverdale.
So, without further ado, here's your formal introduction to all of the new characters in Riverdale Season 3.
Yeah. It's official. We're finally going to meet Jughead's mum and she's played by the one and only Gina Gershon (PS. I Love You, Showgirls, Brooklyn Nine-Nine that one time). Gladys will make her Riverdale debut in episode 8 and, according to Variety, her character is described as "a businesswoman and a biker who runs a salvage yard that doubles as a Southside Serpent compound. She's a Serpent, but she's an educated one (she's got a GED) and she is able to command the attention of the others in the gang. She's been described as a “Fagin” to a crew of teenaged car parts thieves." Something tells us that Gladys is about to majorly stir shit up.
Don't worry. Gladys isn't the only Jones family member who's about to become a part of our lives. Jughead's sister is joining the cast too and she sounds pretty iconic already. Played by newcomer Trinity Linkins, Jellybean is apparently "wise beyond her years and is following in her mother’s footsteps as a con artist". She's only 10 (as noted in season one) but it looks like she could be trouble for many Riverdale characters and we can't wait. She will also make her Riverdale debut in episode 8.
Edgar reportedly isn't going to be appear in Riverdale until the second half of Season 3 but he is already said to have a heavy presence in the first half of the season - and in Alice Cooper's life. According to a casting call, Edgar is a "new-age health “guru” who has helped Alice get her life together after the events of season two. He’s attractive, in a neighbourly way, and charismatic, a wise, comforting presence." Amazing. We reckon that there may be a dark subtext to his character and Alice better be careful (protect Falice!). It was also reported that they're looking for an iconic 90's/00's actor to play the part and fans already have their eyes on Freddie Prinze Jr.
It's true. Edgar has a daughter and she is going to be joining Riverdale in episode 2 (!) of Season 3. We did a bit of sleuthing and her casting call says that she is "otherworldly, seemingly omnipresent, and a bit odd. She’s eager to befriend Betty, and is surprisingly insightful for her age, but may be hiding dark secrets about herself." Oh no. We're worried for Betty. The call also says "a possible direction for the role is a girl who is physically reminiscent of Betty". Things are about to get creepy. It's yet to be announced who will play Evelyn.
It's unclear when Laurie will be joining Riverdale but she already sounds like a problem. Her character description states that she's an "All-American farm girl who takes in Archie and Jughead after they wander onto her property in need of shelter, but what starts as a warm and possibly flirtatious interaction twists into a situation that presents more danger than they could have imagined." Oh and she's played by living legend Riley Keough (Magic Mike, Mad Max: Fury Road).
Okay. If you thought that Laurie might be a danger to Archie in Riverdale Season 3, she's got nothing on Ms. Wright. No not in a Miss Grundy kind of way but she is the prosecutor in Archie's case. "With a conviction in mind, she will weave together disparate moments of Archie's young life to portray him as a dangerous, violent sociopath who is capable of committing a heinous crime." Gulp. Screen legend Penelope Ann Miller will take on the role of Ms. Wright.
Little is currently known about Mr Mantle yet other than the fact that he's Reggie's dad and, if his Archie Comics status is anything to go by, a newspaper publisher. Is he involved in The Register, now owned by Hiram? Will he become one of our fave parents? We do not know. One thing's certain though: Mr Mantle will be played by actor Matt Yang King which means that Riverdale has blessed us with another Hot Parent™.
