American Horror Story star Sarah Paulson plays an overbearing mum in her new horror film and fans think it looks familiar.
Sarah Paulson has a brand new horror film out this Mother's Day weekend called Run and people think it looks like The Act.
Fans of The Act will already know that the Hulu show tells the disturbing true story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard (Joey King) and her mother Dee Dee (Patricia Arquette). Gypsy Rose made headlines in 2015 after it was reported that she was involved in the murder of Dee Dee. Dee Dee had abused Gypsy and lied to her throughout her life.

Dee Dee was believed to have suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy. It is a mental disorder, in which a parent or caretaker "fabricates or induces illness in a person under their care". Dee Dee made Gypsy believe that she suffered from leukaemia, muscular dystrophy, asthma and various other conditions, even though she wasn't sick at all.
The trailer for Sarah Paulson's new film Run came out yesterday (20 Feb) and fans are comparing it to The Act.
Run sees Sarah Paulson delve further into the horror genre she's become known for thanks to her performances in American Horror Story. In the trailer, Sarah plays Diane, an overbearing mother, to Chloe her disabled daughter, but it looks as though all is not as it seems. As the trailer progresses, Chloe believes her mum is lying to her and tries to escape her.
The official synopsis for Run reads:
They say you can never escape a mother’s love… but for Chloe, that’s not a comfort — it’s a threat. There’s something unnatural, even sinister about the relationship between Chloe (newcomer Kiera Allen) and her mom, Diane (Sarah Paulson). Diane has raised her daughter in total isolation, controlling every move she’s made since birth, and there are secrets that Chloe’s only beginning to grasp. From the visionary writers, producers and director of the breakout film Searching, comes a suspense thriller that shows that when mom gets a little too close, you need to RUN.
It's unclear if Diane suffers from Munchausen syndrome by proxy like Dee Dee and/or if Chloe isn't really disabled like Gypsy Rose, but people are addressing the similarities between the new film and the popular series on Twitter.
One fan tweeted: "Sarah Paulson is here and doing amazing as always but can we acknowledge that this movie is a rip off of The Act." Meanwhile, another wrote: "Basically the act with Sarah Paulson. I’m here for it."

Plenty of different films share common themes so it's perhaps unfair to call Run a copy of The Act from a trailer alone. Plus many people are hyped to see the film regardless of the similarities. Sarah Paulson looks amazing and it looks terrifying.
