Contrary to popular beliefs, Robert is not American - he's actually from Portlaoise, County Laois, in Ireland. He also has an Irish accent in real life (duh!) which he doesn’t often use on screen. [George Pimentel/Getty]
Robert plays the role of Klaus Hargreeves (Number 4) in The Umbrella Academy. Klaus is also known as The Séance. His powers are levitation, telekinesis, and the ability to contact the dead, although his powers only work when he is sober. [Netflix]
Speaking to Digital Spy, Sheehan hopes that his Umbrella Academy character won’t be seen as “the gay one” on the show. "Like it or not, if your character is labelled as a 'gay character', then that label becomes defining and it kind of reduces all else about the character…” he said. "Oversimplification if you just say, ‘Oh, well he’s the gay one’. So it doesn’t matter, basically, is the point. It doesn’t matter who he’s attracted to." [Netflix]
Robert Sheehan is heterosexual but he has been open about exploring his sexuality in the past. He told Irish Independent: "I explored my sexuality, just to see if there were any tinges in a gay or bisexual area, but there wasn’t really for me. I gave it a few tries though." [David M. Klaus isn't the first superhero that Robert has played. From 2009 to 2013, he played the role of Nathan in E4's series Misfits. Nathan is carrying out community service when he is caught up in a storm. Later in the series, it's established that his power is that he is immortal. [E4]
Robert appeared in Mortal Engines as Tom Natsworthy. He also appeared in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones as Simon Lewis, but that's a completely different film. [Universal]
Not to be confused with Mortal Engines, Sheehan was also in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones alongside Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Lena Headey and Kevin Zegers. He played the role of Simon Lewis. The film is available to watch on Netflix UK. [Screen Gems]
Before he starred in Misfits, Sheehan starred opposite Rupert Grint and Kimberly Nixon in Cherrybomb. The film follows three teenagers who go on a wild weekend of drink, drugs, shop-lifting and stealing cars which quickly spins beyond their control. Sheehan plays the role of Luke, a drug dealer. If you’re looking for more Robert Sheehan content to watch on Netflix, watch Mute. The film is set in the future and revolves around a mute bartender searching for the love of his life who has mysteriously disappeared. Sheehan plays Luba, the friend of the main character's girlfriend. Alexander Skarsgard, Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux also star. [Netflix]
Robert Sheehan made his literary debut in 2021 with his book Disappearing Act: A Host of Other Characters in 16 Short Stories. The synopsis reads: "Robert Sheehan disappears into characters, challenging the complacencies of everyday experience, often from entirely unexpected angles. Informed by the author’s peripatetic life, Disappearing Act reflects on the absurdity of human behaviour." [Steve Granitz/FilmMagic]
