10 October 2019, 12:31
The Riverdale season 4 opener was a tribute to Luke Perry who died in early 2019. KJ Apa's character, Archie Andrews, gave an emotional eulogy during the Fred Andrews funeral scene.
Riverdale returned last night (10 October) for the first episode of season 4 and, as we expected, the premiere was an emotional one. The episode titled "In Memoriam", was a two-fold tribute to the character of Fred Andrews and the actor who played him, Luke Perry. Luke passed away in March after suffering a stroke in late February.
The season picks up in mid-summer as the kids are making plans for the fourth of July. While sitting down for a meal at Pop's Diner, Archie receives the news that his father Fred Andrews had been struck and killed in a roadside accident. In the emotional episode, Archie travels to Cherry Creek to retrieve his father's body and later delivers a beautiful eulogy at the funeral.

Earlier I was thinking, on the drive over here, how much of Riverdale my dad built. Or just...fixed up. Houses, office buildings. A bit of everything. He helped build this town. And, one day, if I'm lucky enough to have a son or a daughter of my own, I'll be able to point to a building – or even just a brick in the building – and say, "Your grandpa made that...with his hands."
It's the fourth of July. I remember this one fourth, it was raining and the fireworks show was cancelled. And I was so bummed. I remembered sitting in the backyard just bawling. Until my dad came home with all these fireworks. I mean, enough to burn a house down. Do you remember that, mom?
And we lit them in the backyard, it was the best night.
My dad was here for every high and every low. He's the greatest man that I've ever known. It hurts me that I never got to say goodbye. That I don't get to see him again, talk to him.
But his spirit and his memory lives on. In this town and in everyone he's met.
Fred Andrews will always be a part of Riverdale.
I love you so much, dad.
I am (and I can't stress this enough) crying my eyes out at this very moment.
Riverdale's moving tribute to Luke Perry and Fred Andrews will certainly go down as one of the most moving television moments of the year.
Luke co-stars also paid tribute to him on social media ahead of the episode. "Tonight’s episode, and all episodes for the rest of our run, are for Luke. We love, honor, and cherish his memory every single day," Lili Reinhart wrote on Instagram.
