Disney+ have unveiled the trailer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the new TV series based on an adaptation of Rick Riordan’s novels.

Walter Scobell from Netflix’s The Adam Project takes on the lead role of 12-year-old demigod Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon, who’s accused by Zeus of stealing his lightning bolt.

The trailer shows Percy walking through the demigod training facility, Camp Half-Blood, and ending up on the steps of the Poseidon cabin, while in a voiceover he warns other demigods like himself to turn back while they still can - the same opening dialog that opened the original book.

The first two books of the Percy Jackson series - Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters - were adapted into full-length films in 2010 and 2013 starring Logan Lerman as Percy, but contained very little creative input from author Rick Riordan.

For the new series, Rick worked more closely with the showrunners, with the series remaining more true to the books than its film counterparts. And fans - of all ages - are thrilled about the new trailer it seems. One lover of the series on Twitter joked: “me at 12 reading percy jackson vs me at 20 watching the teaser trailer for the tv show”.

Another said: “Why was this perfect? This is everything I’ve ever wanted out of a #PercyJackson adaptation. I’ve loved these books for most of my life, and to hear the books first lines, words that live rent free in my head, verbatim on screen is so special.”

Another person wrote: “Huh, who thought actually bringing the Author on board would make for a better put together show. And before you say it isn't out yet, this teaser alone shows more love and care for the source material than basically any adaptation I've seen.”

A fourth fan joked: “HARRY POTTER WHO??? I ONLY KNOW SON OF SALLY AND POSEIDON, PERCY JACKSON”.

At just 13 years old, Walker is much closer in age to Percy in the books than previous actor Logan Lerman was in the films.

As for who else we can expect to star in the series? Leah Sava Jeffries (Empire) and Aryan Simhadri (Cheaper by the Dozen) will play Percy's best friends Annabeth and Grover.

Elsewhere, Virginia Kul (Big Little Lies) will play Percy's mother Sally, Glynn Turman (The Wire) will play Camp Half-Blood activities director Chiron, Jason Mantzoukas (The Good Place) will play god of wine Dionysus and Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) will play Hades' servant Alecto.

Tim Sharpp, Dior Good Jon and Charlie Bushnell have also been cast as Gabe, Clarisse and Luke respectively.

A release date for the series has not been confirmed yet, but sadly we could have a little while to wait. Initially, the show was scheduled to come out at some point in 2023 but Rick Riordan took to his website earlier this year to reveal that the series likely won't debut until early 2024.

In a statement, Rick explained: "It’s probably going to take us through December or into January to film all the episodes of season one, which is roughly one month of filming per episode (eight episodes total). That means post-production will begin in early 2023, when the pieces are fitted together, edited and augmented with all the special effects and sound. This process also takes months and months, and that’s not even accounting for closed-captioning, subtitling and dubbing into other languages for our international viewers. That takes another army of people to accomplish."

He continued: "Given all this, I think the most likely air date will probably be early 2024. Again, that’s just me guessing. The actual release dates are determined by the studio and the streaming service, and have to take in hundreds of other factors like the release schedule for all Disney+ shows, timing for publicity, etc., etc."
