Paul Wesley says he wishes both Salvatore brothers died on The Vampire Diaries

During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Paul Wesley revealed his ideal Vampire Diaries alternate ending. He's had some time to think and, as it turns out, he wishes Damon had died too.
The Vampire Diaries ran from 2009 to 2017 and over the course of the hugely successful show we saw its characters endure a whole lot of drama. They were killed on a weekly basis, possessed, able to turn their humanity on and off, and they fought every supernatural creature that blew into Mystic Falls. Through that, brothers Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) remained reluctant allies, even as they competed for the love and attention of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev).
Vampire Diaries wrapped on a bittersweet note but Paul Wesley has his own ideas about how the series should have ended. The actor and director stopped by Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens Live to reveal the ending he would have most liked to see.

A fan called into WWHL and asked what Paul thought of Vampire Diaries' ending. Paul was candid and revealed that he thought both Salvatore siblings should have died.

"I honestly think both brothers should have died," Paul said. "I feel good about it. Although I would have liked that we both died and that Elena, the girl at the end of the show, all her memory was wiped and she went on to live a normal life and she forgot that we ever existed. I think that would have been nice."
Okay, Paul! Tell us how you really feel!
As die-hard fans will know, that is absolutely not how the show ended. In fact, we're positive Paul's ending might have inspired some peeved fan mail from viewers.
For the show's farewell, Stefan sacrificed his life and Damon ended up with Elena in a truly bittersweet ending. Don't expect Stefan to come back from the dead for a Julie Plec spin-off, either. Even though Paul has already directed an episode of Legacies, he told TV Line earlier in 2019 that he's happy for Stefan to stay dead.
"Let’s not resurrect something and potentially ruin the legacy," he told the publication.
Meanwhile, Paul's TV brother Ian Somerhalder is gearing up for the 5 December premiere of V-Wars on Netflix. More Vampire drama? Yes, please.
