After some major names were snubbed, people are calling out the lack of diversity in the Oscar 2020 nominations using the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.
The 92nd annual Academy Awards kick off next month (10 Feb) and on Monday (13 Jan) the Oscar nominations were announced. The Joker managed to bag an impressive 11 nominations this year, while The Irishman, Once Upon a Time In Hollywood and 1917 were not too far behind with 10.
However, there were some things noticeably absent from the list. Erm, where is Beyoncé? Jennifer Lopez? Lupita Nyong'o!? Oh, the Academy just left a number women and ethnic minorities out of the nominations list.

It didn't go unnoticed, either. Issa Rae read out the Best Director nominations (all white, all men) alongside John Cho, and she said what we were all thinking: "Congratulations to all these men."
Don't get us wrong, there are some highlights on the nominations list (Florence Pugh!!!) but needless to say, the ceremony will be very white and very male. Hm, imagine how tired we are.
Of course, the internet had something to say about the unjust nominations.
Did they even watch Us?!
nothing but respect for MY best actress in a leading role #OscarNoms pic.twitter.com/1reTLJs3gh

The Academy basically did Lupita like Denzel.

We will give you an Oscar, but only when you portray yourself in one of the ways we want to see Black people. #OscarNoms
She deserves an award for her solo pole routine alone.
i genuinely think not nominating j lo is rooted in racism and sexism about the kinds of performances the oscars deem worthy of praise doNOT @ me

Hustlers: An entertaining, genuinely moving, and deceptively thoughtful exploration of sex work, sisterhood, and class featuring a world-class triple threat performance that was shot in 29 days.

This has to be a joke, right?
Also I was expecting it but still dissapointed by no #OscarNoms for Taron Egerton in Rocketman. One of my favourite performances of the year! pic.twitter.com/f4FAxBi1JG
— Noah Bovenizer (@NoahBovenizer) January 13, 2020
No Lupita. No Taron Egerton. No Adam Sandler. No Awkwafina. No Jennifer Lopez. Nothing for The Farewell. One nomination for Knives Out.

I’m bout to knock all this shit over.#OscarNoms pic.twitter.com/863Aon1fh3

Greta has been the only female nominee in the last decade – for Ladybird in 2017.
not one woman.... greta gerwig marielle heller lulu wang alma har'el melina matsoukas céline sciamma all better than todd phillips https://t.co/XjuPlJIWtJ

no acting oscar nominations for the parasite cast but of course there was space to give scarlett johansson TWO nominations pic.twitter.com/y9dCLPims0
— Olwethu 🌸 (@parkchanwookss) January 13, 2020
Just… no comment.
So they have Scarlett Johansson nominated for both best actress & supporting actress? while Lupita Nyong’o played two masterful characters in the same movie and she she was completely snubbed #OscarNoms pic.twitter.com/IlFjSahEjs
— c (@chuuzus) January 13, 2020
they were really so scare of diversity that nominated scarlett johanson in two categories over lupita, awkwafina or the parasite ladies...
— ana 🪐 (@demilessons) January 13, 2020
…but the Academy didn't agree, lol.
Uncut Gems enters the league of films Too Good For The Oscars

Cynthia Erivo is the only person of colour actor nominated for her role in Harriet.
Gerwig (who is great) is a white, privileged film snob who’s dating a film snob, shoots on film, worships Tarantino & has Spielberg’s backing. She checks all boxes of our white male def. of “auteur,” except she’s a woman. And she can’t get in. Imagine how hard it is for WOC.

Ocean’s Nine where JLo joins the squad (Awkwafina is already there) and the ladies steal Oscars from straight white men who don’t deserve them.

Directed by Greta Gerwig.
What a year to nominate one (1) nonwhite actor like that makes any sense at all pic.twitter.com/72mmz4kpqU

In conclusion, the Academy really need to do better – but we're not holding our breath.
