Netflix has cancelled One Day at a Time after three seasons...
One Day at a Time has just been cancelled by Netflix.
Ever since One Day at a Time first aired on Netflix back in 2017, it's been praised by fans and critics alike as one of the most important sitcoms in recent TV history. Not only is it consistently hilarious (Rita Moreno, Justina Machado and the rest of the cast are all comedic geniuses) but it also centres a Latinx family (!) and broaches necessary topics like homophobia, anxiety and immigration in moving and sensitive ways (!!!).
Why has One Day at a Time been cancelled by Netflix?
In February, One Day at a Time showrunner Gloria Caldéron Kellett revealed that Netflix had told her that the series would be cancelled if it didn't get more viewers and now the hit video streaming service has announced that it won't be renewing One Day at a Time. Taking to Twitter today (Mar 14), Netflix wrote: "We’ve made the very difficult decision not to renew One Day at a Time for a fourth season."
They then tweeted: "The choice did not come easily — we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season. Thank you Gloria Calderon Kellett & Mike Royce for always making us laugh and never shying away from bravely and beautifully tackling tough subject matter in a meaningful way".
Netflix also thanked their cast: "To Justina Machado, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rita Moreno: thank you for inviting us into your family. You filled this show with so much heart and warmth and love, it truly felt like home." And last but not least they made a promise to "continue finding ways to tell these stories."

And to anyone who felt seen or represented — possibly for the first time — by ODAAT, please don’t take this as an indication your story is not important. The outpouring of love for this show is a firm reminder to us that we must continue finding ways to tell these stories.

Alongside the cancellation announcement, the cast and crew of One Day at a Time have taken to Twitter to react to the news and thank the show's fans. Lead actress Justina Machado wrote: "I’m so grateful to have played Penelope Alvarez. I don’t even know how to begin to express my gratitude to everyone. Truly, I am so honored that we got to tell our stories."

I’m so grateful to have played Penelope Alvarez. I don’t even know how to begin to express my gratitude to everyone. Truly, I am so honored that we got to tell our stories .Yes it was a Latinx family but it was a universal story about family and love. An American Familia ❤️

My heart is breaking, but I still can’t help but thank Netflix for giving the Alvarez family a home for 3 years and for changing my life... and to the fans: familia para siempre. I got you. ❤️ https://t.co/ECvLXaJoqP

This is heartbreaking and I so wish it wasn’t true. But I’m keeping the faith that @OneDayAtATime finds a new home. THANK YOU to all of you who’ve watched and supported. We see you and we love you. Don’t quit before the miracle happens ; ) https://t.co/00Fzgmv5YU

One Day at a Time had what television used pray for: great quality, great reviews, passionate fan base. Like Star Trek. Like Deadwood. What I learned a while back is that there is always a closing night. Sometimes it comes too soon.

Thank you to @JustinaMachado @TheRitaMoreno @Isabella_Gomez @themarcelruiz @Tobolowsky @toddgrinnell for making our dreams come true. We love this family we made on and off screen. Thank you to our writers & crew & guest cast. It was a privilege.

As mentioned by many of the cast and crew, there is a possibility that One Day at a Time could be picked up by another TV network for a fourth season. Fingers crossed that it is. It's a remarkable show and it would be a great shame to see end.
