With season 2 of Netflix's 'You' already in production, what can fans expect from the haunting thriller starring Penn Badgley? Unanswered questions about Candice's return, Beck's death, and even Joe himself could be revealed in the upcoming season. So, what do fans need to know about 'You' season 2?
Netflix's You left fans wanting more after its dark ending for Guinevere Beck and shock Candace reveal. Penn Badgley's character Joe was as sinister as they come and season 2 of You is sure to be full of its own surprises and shock reveals. So, what can fans expect from season 2 of You?
You was renewed for season 2 before season 1 even premiered. The series was originally picked up for season 2 by Lifetime but will now appear exclusively on Netflix. It is not unusual for Netflix to take over production on a show like this. Travelers, for instance, was handed over to Netflix from Canadian broadcaster Showcase just before its third season.
Fans of You can expect a season 2 that will be broadcast exclusively on Netflix.
In an interview with the New York Times, Sera Gamble revealed a couple of season 2 changes that viewers could expect as a result of You's move to Netflix.
"We have a little more flexibility around timing, since we don’t have commercial ads, and also we can say the word [expletive] a lot more. As someone who swears a lot, that’s a great thing. Netflix lets you give as many [expletive] as you want," Sera told The Times.
Does this mean there could be longer episodes in You season 2? With no commercial breaks, there could be the potential to add 10-15 minutes to each episodes and dive even deeper into each storyline.
Gamble also mentioned that the characters would be able to express themselves using more colourful language. Ah, the perks of being a Netflix original, eh?
It's unclear when season 2 of You will premiere on Netflix, other than a hint in the show's Instagram bio that it will be "coming soon".
Based on cast Instagram posts, You season 1 wrapped filming in December 2017. It was renewed in July 2018 and made its way to Lifetime in September and then Netflix in December 2018. While it's totally unclear when season 2 might come to Netflix, the second half of 2019 might be a solid guess if the streaming platform decides to release it at a similar time of year as season 1.
Back in November 2018, showrunner Sera Gamble confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that they'd "started work" on season 2.
Gamble also posted a photo on Instagram with the caption: "Don’t be fooled by these innocent faces.... they’re a chunk of the team behind Joe Goldberg, reporting for season 2 duty."
Caroline Kepnes' book Hidden Bodies is the follow-up to You. Part of the book's synopsis reads as follows:
In Hollywood, Joe blends in effortlessly with the other young upstarts. He eats guac, works in a bookstore, and flirts with a journalist neighbor. But while others seem fixated on their own reflections, Joe can’t stop looking over his shoulder.
Showrunner Sera Gamble confirmed in a THR interview that Joe is, indeed, headed west to California. As we all know, Joe has a lot of loose ends from season 1 in New York.
From his neighbour Paco being one of the last people to see Beck alive, to the return of Joe's ex-Candace, we're guessing season 2 might incorporate some of Joe's season 1 troubles, as well as some of his old bad guy antics.
As for who is returning for season 2 of You, Penn Badgley will obviously reprise his role as Joe. We could hear from from the Salingers' PI, and, who knows, perhaps Dr. Nicky might return to plead his innocence.
Penn Badgley talks 'You', social media, and why his character Joe would kill Dan Humphrey
For those of you holding out hope, it would seem that Guinevere Beck is really really dead. Joe was able to frame Dr. Nicky by linking the body and Beck's manuscript to him. Without the body there would be no crime and nothing to frame Beck's therapist for.
That doesn't necessarily mean we've seen the last of Elizabeth Lail. Could fans see Beck in season 2 as a ghost, a dream, a hallucination, or a manifestation of Joe's inner turmoil? The possibilities are endless.
Much of season 1 hints at Joe having killed his ex Candace. However, Candace shows up in the final scene and tells Joe they have a lot to discuss. In the original book by Caroline Kepnes, Joe does actually kill Candace but it will be interesting to see how You's writers fill in the gaps of this mysterious character's whereabouts.
There are no trailers for You season 2 just yet! We will update this page when a trailer and more information becomes available.
