For Netflix’s Hollywood, Ryan Murphy brings together a star-studded cast featuring a mix of screen actors and award-winning Broadway legends. While you may recognise multiple cast members from their roles in previous Ryan Murphy productions, there’s plenty of fresh faces for you to fall in love with too. Here’s everything you need to know about the cast, and the characters they play. [Netflix]
David Corenswet plays Jack, an aspiring actor who also works as a gas station attendant and a gigolo. Netflix viewers and fans of Ryan Murphy's productions will instantly recognise David from The Politician, where he played River Barkley. He also appeared in an episode of House of Cards. [PA Images]
Jeremy Pope plays Archie, an aspiring writer who is also dealing with prejudice over his race and sexuality. Jeremy is a Tony award nominee with a number of stage productions under his belt, including Choir Boy and Ain't Too Proud. Hollywood is his first on-screen role. [PA Images]
Dylan McDermott, who fans of American Horror Story will remember as Ben Harmon in Murder House amongst other roles, plays Ernie, the manager of the gas station where Jack works. [PA Images]
Broadway legend Patti LuPone plays the role of Avis. In the trailer, the affluent studio head Avis can be seen pulling up at the gas station before entering a hotel room with Jack. In case you're not familiar with Patti, the living legend has won 2 Grammys, 2 Tonys and 2 Olivier awards. Alongside her stunning Broadway career, she's also appeared in Will & Grace, Ugly Betty, Pose, Glee and 30 Rock. American Horror Story fans will also recognise her as Joan in AHS: Coven. [PA Images]
Maude Apatow plays Henrietta, Jack's girlfriend who doesn't quite back his dreams of becoming an actor. Maude's most recent role was in HBO's Euphoria, where she plays Lexi Howard. She's also appeared in the films Assassination Nation, Knocked Up and This Is 40, alongside her mother Leslie Mann and her sister Iris Apatow. Her father is director Judd Apatow. [PA Images]
Darren Criss takes the role of aspiring director Raymond in Hollywood. Darren is a frequent face in Ryan Murphy's productions, having starred in Glee, American Horror Story: Hotel and The Assassination of Gianni Versace. [PA Images]
Laura Harrier plays Camille, an actress who faces prejudice because of her race. Laura is most well known for her role as Liz in Spider-Man: Homecoming, as well as BlacKkKlansman. [PA Images]
Samara Weaving plays actress Claire Wood. Samara saw huge success in 2019 when she starred as the lead in Ready Or Not. Her other roles include The Babysitter, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Australian soap Home & Away. [PA Images]
Jake plays Rock Hudson, the real life actor known for his roles in Giant, Magnificent Obsession, Pillow Talk and the Golden Globe-nominated box office flop Darling Lili opposite Dame Julie Andrews. The real Rock Hudson died in 1985 of AIDS-related complications. Jake’s previously roles include Patriots Day, Blockers and Horse Girl. He’ll be seen next in Top Gun: Maverick. Holland Taylor takes the role of the smart studio executive Ellen Kincaid who works closely with Avis Amberg and Dick Samuels. Holland’s incredible career spans decades and includes iconic roles in The Practice, Two and a Half Men, The Truman Show and Legally Blonde. Jim plays the real life Hollywood talent agent, Henry Willson. Willson discovered several huge stars and helped advance the careers of stars like Lana Turner. He was also responsible for creating multiple stage names for actors including Rock Hudson. As well as his iconic role on The Big Bang Theory, Jim has also recently appeared in Hidden Figures and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. Joe plays the role of fellow studio executive Dick Samuels, who works closely with Ellen Kincaid. Much like co-star Patti LuPone, Joe is a double Tony Award winner. He’s directed multiple Broadway productions, including Wicked. Joe has worked with Ryan Murphy multiple times throughout his career, most notably on the movie The Normal Heart. Michelle plays the real life Anna May Wong, the actress who was considered to be the first Chinese American Hollywood movie star. In 1935, Wong was refused to be considered for the lead role (a Chinese character) in The Good Earth. Instead, the role went to white actress Luise Rainer. Rainer later won the Oscar for the role. Queen Latifah plays real life actress Hattie McDaniel. McDaniel was the first African-American actor to win an Oscar for her role as Mammy in Gone With The Wind (1939). She appeared in over 300 films, but only received credits for 83. Alongside her music, Queen Latifah’s most iconic roles include Living Single, Set It Off, Barbershop 2, Chicago and Hairspray.
