Mulan will be released on Disney+ for $30 and people are fuming

As you probably know, Disney's live-action remake of Mulan was set to be one of the biggest releases of the year. But due to the current coronavirus pandemic, the Mulan release date was pushed back several times.
The highly-anticipated blockbuster was initially set to premiere on March 27, before being rescheduled to July 24 and then August 21.
However, Disney announced that the big premiere will no longer be happening. In fact, Mulan is skipping theatres all together and will be released on Disney+ on September 4. Oh, but there's a catch. Viewers will have to pay $29.99 to watch Mulan – that's on top of the streaming service's monthly fees.

Understandably, the $29.99 price tag didn't go down well.

Others even thought it was a tad unfair that an Asian movie wouldn't get its moment in the spotlight.

Mulan was supposed to be a game changer for Asian representation, it would've been huge for Asians everywhere to see a mainstream movie in movie theaters worldwide and most likely pulling massive numbers now it's over fuck this

Mulan being released as VOD validates an old fear of mine that this movie’s poor marketing+release will let it flop and become the precedent studios point to to undo the marketability of Asians “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Farewell,” and “Parasite” built up.

There is a little bit of hope, though. Variety reports that in markets where Disney+ isn't available Mulan will play in select cinemas. Disney CEO Bob Chapek also said that Mulan's straight to Disney+ release was an "anomaly" and a "one-off", and does not mean that other movies will be released this way.
