The death had huge implications for how the storyline involving Bryce's murder eventually wrapped up. However, it wasn't shown on screen and fans aren't really sure what actually happened. So, here's an explanation for that death and how it could have a huge impact on everyone's lives going into season 4.
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD FOR 13 REASONS WHY SEASON 3
Last warning for spoilers for the season 3 finale. You've been warned!
In the final episode, it is revealed that Monty de la Cruz died in his jail cell following his sexual assault arrest after Tyler turned him in. (In case you forgot, Monty raped Tyler in the bathroom in a broom handle in season 2. Tyler kept it a secret for 8 months before he opened up to a handful of people.)
The last time we see Monty, he's being taken to his prison cell following a meeting with his father.
Later, when Ani attempts to pin the blame of Bryce's death onto Monty, it's revealed by Deputy Standall who says, "Montgomery de la Cruz was killed in his jail cell just hours ago.”
Monty's death is not shown on screen and the specifics of how he died are not discussed, but we can assume that it was a fellow inmate who killed him. Bryce's death is then blamed on Monty, and the truth is buried along with him – or so we think.
Following the police report, Winston tells Ani that he was with Monty the night that Bryce was murdered. He is effectively Monty's alibi and fans are now speculating that that information could bring the group's entire lie crashing down in season 4, as he expressed to Ani that Monty didn't deserve to be framed for murder.
Implicated in the cover up of Bryce's murder is Alex (who pushed him into the river), Jessica (who was with Alex), Zach (who beat Bryce to a pulp before leaving him on the ground), Ani (who lied to the police) and Deputy Standall (who eventually pinned the blame on Monty.)
Season 4 will likely reveal more about Monty's death and whether or not Winston will seek justice. Will they all manage to get away with it again, though?
