TV ghost? Audiences were shook to say the least.

13 Reasons Why season 2 is now available to stream on Netflix. In this second season, viewers get to see the different sides of Hannah and receive more context about what her life at Liberty High was like.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Early on in the series, we learn that our main protagonist Clay is not coping well with Hannah's death as he begins to see her as a ghostly apparition.

Based on years of excessive television watching, it's clear this is the ol' ghostly manifestation as a result of unresolved issues trope. A classic.

The ghost of Hannah Baker is obviously not an actual ghost and 13 Reasons Why writers stick pretty closely to the rules of hallucination ghosts. Namely, the fact that Ghost Hannah never tells Clay things he doesn't already know. That's key.

Because the ghost is merely a manifestation, she only knows what Clay knows--our actual understanding of Hannah's story is furthered by what the other characters describe. Not Hannah's ghost.

Hallucination ghost Hannah is an apparatus for Clay to work out his issues with the trial, but fans aren't entirely sold.

Hannah's ghost was even sarcastic, like the real Hannah. What a trip.

Of course, people on the internet couldn't help but poke fun at Hannah the Friendly ghost.

Lol

The fact that the deceased love of Clay's life was appearing to him. Err...yeah. It was definitely a lot.

So, why was Hannah a ghost in 13 Reasons Why season 2?

Throughout the first season, Hannah is in Clay's head. With the tapes, she is able to penetrate his psyche, telling her everything she wants him to know about her story.

In the second season, Hannah is still in Clay's head, but as a semi-corporeal entity that helps him work through some of his complicated issues.

Is it ham fisted? VERY. Does it serve a specific purpose both visually and from a storytelling standpoint? Yes. We now understand that Clay, despite that unshakable savior complex of his, still has a lot to work through when it comes to his grief.

What do you guys think? Is Ghost Hannah a "no" from you or do you like the 13 Reasons Why writers' take on her this season?
