Fans are already campaigning for the diverse and inclusive show to be renewed.
In case you missed it, the teenage coming-of-age '90s-inspired series Everything Sucks has been cancelled at Netflix after just one season.
Everything Sucks was praised by critics and viewers for an authentic portrayal Kate Messner's coming out story but struggled to breakthrough to wider audiences. Despite catching a bit of heat on Twitter over the age gap between the two actresses involved in the show's main romantic relationship, Everything Sucks had a 69 percent rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes by the way, and a whopping 89 percent among viewers.
Both cast members and fans of the show have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment in Netflix for cancelling without taking a chance on a second season which was already being plotted out by the show's creators Ben York Jones and Michael Mohan.
Like you I’m heartbroken but I’m grateful I got to portray this complex & important character. Broken, closeted Kate blossomed into a teen icon. Love from fans & critics is testament to the power of her unique voice. I admire you for raising your unique voices. #iamkatemessner pic.twitter.com/Y5liRBZqCt

everything sucks: a show that depicts being gay in the 90’s, has 2 queer women, funny, amazing cast, important for lgbtq+ kids and shows the struggle of figuring out your sexuality as a teenager

The show Everything Sucks portrays an authentic young lgbtq+ storyline. It not only beautifully touches on coming to terms with sexuality, but growing up, supporting your peers, identity, and more 🏳️🌈 This is the show our generation needs #RenewEverythingSucks

everything sucks is such a pure show with a great plot and a good lgbt rep and it’s just all about finding yourself and everything is so accurate and netflix goes and cancels the second season they’re over

Everything Sucks is now the latest in a string of shows with a diverse and inclusive set of characters that the streaming service has cut short. Admittedly, the viewership for the show wasn't anything to rave about but at some point, Netflix is gonna have to take an L and produce these shows and tell these stories regardless.
Unfortunately, representation for people of colour and the LGBTQ+ community (particularly young teenagers) is still few and far between on mainstream TV. It's an area that Netflix could probably dominate but with this latest cancellation, it doesn't look promising.
RIP Everything Sucks, you were great. You deserved better. Banana slug.
