Camila Mendes has used her platform to advocate for body positive causes and revealed her co-star called to apologise following his Twitter controversy.
Earlier this month, Riverdale actor Charles Melton apologised to fans after a series of tweets he allegedly wrote resurfaced online. In the widely circulated tweets and screenshots, Charles Melton allegedly made disparaging comments about "fat" people such as "fat chicks need to understand that wearing yoga pants is a privilege not a right."
Charles apologised shortly after the scandal, telling E! News " I'm truly sorry for making inconsiderate comments several years ago and apologize to anyone I hurt. What I posted and said was immature, offensive and inappropriate."
Now, Charles' co-star Camila Mendes has revealed that he called her personally to apologise for his words. In an interview with Access Online, the Riverdale star opened up about the controversy and how her co-star reached out to say sorry.
"Charles called me personally to apologise. He was devastated. He felt really sorry about it and he called me personally and he said [...] I'm really sorry. I know Charles. I know he's not actually a bad person."
"I think it's a matter of sometimes you tweet things forever ago and they're buried in there and they come out. It sucks and I do not agree with anything he said or support those statements but I know that that's not who he is."
Camila and the rest of her co-stars are especially close, often appearing on each other's social media feeds.
It's easy to see why Charles reached out to Camila to apologise personally. Camila has used her platform recently to advocate for body positive causes like Project Heal.
In a recent interview with Marie Claire Malaysia, Camila revealed her own past relationship with her body image, saying, "when I grew up, I was obsessed with being thin. I always wanted to be lean, and then I went to college, I noticed my body was changing and it made me feel out of control but I didn't understand it."
Riverdale is currently on hiatus and will begin filming season 3 in July.
