The film has a whopping 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and has already broken box office records.
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, just when you thought you had already made up your mind about what film you would be calling the best movie of 2018, it looks like we have a new contender.
Bo Burnham's Eighth Grade was officially released in cinemas last week (July 13) and it's already getting the most INSANE reviews from the audience.
The film, which already received huge praise when it dropped at Sundance earlier in the year, is currently 'Certified Fresh' on Rotten Tomatoes with a whopping 99% rating. (There's ONE 'Rotten' rating out of 75... but honestly, who cares?!)
The film has already broken records at the box office too... According to Variety, the film made $255,000 over the three-day opening weekend. And while that doesn't sound like a lot, wait until you hear that it was only played in FOUR THEATRES. Yes, really.
Fans, critics and celebrities alike are all flocking to see it and the reaction on Twitter so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Everyone is absolutely losing it over Elsie Fisher's stellar performance as Kayla along with the topics that are tackled on screen. Some just can't believe a twenty-seven year old guy was able to nail such an intricate and accurate portrayal of a teenage girl's life.
I loved @boburnham's movie Eighth Grade, which features a wrenchingly brilliant performance from @ElsieKFisher. The film wrestles with social media with a complexity I haven't seen on screen before.

saw Eighth Grade last night and was blown away. @ElsieKFisher is unreal in it. it’s a shame it has to be rated R, because people of any age should be able to see it, especially middle schoolers. parents, take your kids to see this. you’ll all love it. it’s special. thx @boburnham

I think I got out of EIGHTH GRADE what so many got out of LADY BIRD. every emotional beat resonated with me. every awkward pause felt like a quake to my core. so perfectly conceived and executed

Just saw @boburnham’s Eighth Grade. A movie hasn’t scraped my heart like that in a long time. It might be a perfect movie.

Saw Eighth Grade tonight. It was really damn good. Felt like it very accurately captured what it’s like to be a modern day teen, right down to the lits and dabs!

Great job @boburnham 🍌
“Eighth Grade” is such a special, impressive, beautiful film. Yet another thing that @boburnham is exceptional at. I can’t wait to watch it again and again, for years to come. If you’re a father, daughter, former 13 year old or a human you will LOVE this movie.

Eighth Grade, the new film by Bo Burnham, examines modern adolescence in such an intimate way it’s gut wrenching. It’s also genuinely hilarious, like someone hitting a raw nerve but giving you laughing gas to help with the pain. Elsie Fisher is tremendous as Kayla. See it.

#EighthGrade: I laughed, I cried, I walked out of that theater remembering that I am not, in fact, a grown up woman with a cool job, an amazing husband, great friends, and a comfy apartment, but a horrifyingly awkward teenager just pretending to be one and hoping no one notices

From social media habits and all too familiar social anxiety to navigating friendships, relationships and the all important conversations about being "ready"... Eighth Grade sounds like an intense flashback to our early teenage years that's about to hit us all in places we forgot existed.
There is currently no UK release date for the film, but it is out in the US right now (in New York and Los Angeles, before spreading to cinemas across the country) and judging by what we've heard so far, we think it might just be one of the most raved about movies of the year. Hereditary is shaking.
