Bird Box sequel has been confirmed and the plot sounds terrifying

It's official - a sequel to Bird Box is coming. Author Josh Malerman is set to release the follow-up novel in October 2019 but will it be on Netflix?
Can you believe that Bird Box was only released on Netflix FOUR months ago? Feels like a decade, doesn't it? The record-breaking post-apocalyptic movie starring Sandra Bullock was all the internet could talk about back in December. From the unanswered questions and the easter eggs right down to what the monsters looked like in real life, the hype was out of control.
There was even a lot of discussion about what a potential sequel would look like. Would we explore what happened in other parts of the world? The origins of the monsters? Well, it doesn't look like we have to worry much longer because GUESS WHAT? A sequel has just been confirmed. Bird Box 2 is coming! Well, sort of...
Josh Malerman, author of the original 2014 novel (the book that the film is based on), is writing a follow-up called Malorie and it's set to explore what happens next.
What will happen in the Bird Box sequel?
Speaking to Esquire, Malerman revealed that the sequel is happening and it's coming VERY soon. As in *this year* soon.
Titled Malorie, the book sequel will hit shelves on October 1st 2019. The story will take place 8 years after the ending of the first one and will focus on exploring Malorie's story as well as the creatures who are still raging away outside. We'll get to know both a little better.
In case you didn't already know, the ending of the Bird Box novel is slightly different (and much darker) than the Netflix ending but both still kind of end on the same note: with Malorie and the kids safe at the sanctuary.
However, it doesn't look like we'll see Malorie living her best life at the sanctuary at the start of the sequel. "They’ve left there. Similar in that they’re trying to make things work. It’s not like it opens with them in paradise," explains Malerman.
Oh, and given the 8 year time jump, Girl and Boy won't be the lil' 5 year olds we know and love. They'll be teenagers and by the sounds of things, might not even feature that much in the sequel anyway.
“In the time between Bird Box coming out and the time since I’ve been writing Malorie, I’ve been asked a ton of times: people want to know what happened with Boy and Girl,” he said. “But as much as I care about Boy and Girl, this isn’t their story. The Bird Box world is Malorie’s story, and I wanted to know more about her. I wanted to get to know her even better.”
Honestly, Girl deserved better than this.
Of course, while there's currently no confirmation that Malerman's sequel will be adapted into a sequel to the Netflix movie, there's a preeeeeeetty good chance that it'll happen anyway given the absolutely astonishing viewing numbers Bird Box pulled in in the first week alone.
