The writers also explain why Captain America's ending had to happen...
The writers of Avengers: Endgame have opened up about all things Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).
This is why Katherine Langford's huge Avengers: Endgame character was cut from the film
Ever since Avengers: Endgame came out last month (Apr 26), fans have been losing it over the ending, and specifically what happens to three of Marvel's biggest heroes in the film. Captain America goes back in time to return the Infinity Stones and grow old with Peggy, Iron Man sacrifices himself to kill Thanos and Black Widow jumps to her death so that Hawkeye can retrieve the soul stone. Now the writers have explained why they... RIPPED OUT ALL OF OUR HEARTS.
Captain America's ending in Avengers: Endgame explained
Discussing Captain America's ending with the New York Times, Stephen McFeely said: "From the very first outline, we knew he was going to get his dance." He then went on to add: "He’s postponed a life in order to fulfil his duty. That’s why I didn’t think we were ever going to kill him. Because that’s not the arc. The arc is, I finally get to put my shield down because I’ve earned that." Okay. This makes sense and Steve Rogers getting his happy ending is what he deserves!
Why did Iron Man die in Avengers: Endgame?
As for Iron Man, the writers were always set on killing him. "Everyone knew this was going to be the end of Tony Stark." said McFeely. "The watchword was, end this chapter, and he started the chapter." Christopher Markus then explained: "In a way, he has been the mirror of Steve Rogers the entire time. Steve is moving toward some sort of enlightened self-interest, and Tony’s moving to selflessness. They both get to their endpoints." I'm listening.
Discussing if any other outcomes for Tony were ever considered, Markus revealed: "No. Because we had the opportunity to give him the perfect retirement life, within the movie. Are he and Pepper going to get together? Yes. They got married, they had a kid, it was great. It’s a good death. It doesn’t feel like a tragedy. It feels like a heroic, finished life." Heroic but still tragic. Morgan now has to grow up without a dad you monsters.
Why did Black Widow die in Avengers: Endgame?
Black Widow's death had a different reasoning. According to McFeely: "Her journey, in our minds, had come to an end if she could get the Avengers back." He then explained: "She comes from such an abusive, terrible, mind-control background, so when she gets to Vormir and she has a chance to get the family back, that’s a thing she would trade for."
McFreely revealed that they did consider killing Hawkeye instead but were persuaded otherwise. "Jen Underdahl, our visual effects producer, read an outline or draft where Hawkeye goes over. And she goes, 'Don’t you take this away from her.' I actually get emotional thinking about it." Natasha really is a queen in every sense of the word.
As it stands, it looks like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans won't return to the Marvel franchise unless it's via flashback, however, Scarlett Johansson will star as Black Widow in an upcoming Black Widow film.
