Now that John Krasinski has confirmed the sequel, here's everything we know about the film.
John Krasinski’s directorial debut, A Quiet Place, was a surprise hit. It tells the story of a family trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic Earth where monsters who hunt via sound have taken over. It’s a small-scale, low-budget affair that made millions at the box office and has really taken off. We're talking memes and everything.
While one character (spoiler!) does die in the film, the setup means that it’d be possible to have a sequel. In the post-apocalyptic universe, there are potentially millions of people and families that the tight format could focus on. Now, Paramount are moving ahead with a sequel following news that the original has made more than $256 million at the worldwide box office on a $17-21 million budget. Here’s everything we know so far about the sequel:
John Krasinski and the writers have shed some light on ideas they have for the sequel. Writer Scott Beck said, “We even have some of the set pieces already written for it. In a sense, that's what you have to base it around. You have to figure out, what is the worst possible situation to put your characters in and go from there”. Potentially, the idea of amplifying a cochlear implant’s high frequency, sound could go further – either with the original family or new characters.
Krasinski went further into the idea of new characters, saying “where my mind kept wandering as we were making it, was the question of who was on the other end of those fires, when the father lights the fire and in the distance those other fires light up. How did those people survive? How did that old man survive? In the extreme these characters are going through, there's no room to think about that. They're there, there's an old man who's about to scream, they just have to deal with that. I think it would be interesting to see what's going on elsewhere at this same time.”
There is no news on the title yet, so allow us to suggest some ideas: A Quiet Place 2: Shh, A Quieter Place, A Quiet Place: With a Vengeance.
John Krasinski’s character may have died in the first film, but his wife and children are still alive. However, if the theory that the follow-up will focus on a new group of survivors holds true, the chances are Emily Blunt and co won’t be in it at all.
The original came out just last month (April), so hold your horses – while the sequel has been greenlit it hasn’t been written or entered pre-production, so it’s unlikely to be out for at least another year or two.
While John Krasinski hasn’t confirmed whether or not he’ll be back to direct, it seems likely that he’d want to nurture his baby and continue his success. GET THAT PAPER, JOHN! CHASE THAT ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY OSCAR!
