'Pop Punk High' is now playing in New York and you can hear the original music right here.
Here's a story we weren't expecting to write today - a new live show entitled 'Pop Punk High - The World's First Pop Punk Musical' has just opened to critical acclaim in New York.
Now playing at the Parkside Lounge venue, the musical by Ben Lapidus and Anderson Cook focuses on "Derek, a young poser, wants nothing more than to become king of Pop Punk High and win Amanda Bunkface’s love. It seems all but impossible for a loser like Derek, but when he finds a bong in his attic containing the ghost/genie of Avril Lavigne (who's trying to find the record exec that murdered her), his wildest dreams may be possible after all." Just your average musical theatre plotline then...
All joking aside, the show clearly has its tongue firmly in its cheek and is a loving tribute to the all the best music 2006 had to offer. It has become a cult favourite around town over the last few year, moving between a variety of fringe venues across the city.
The show features original songs including 'My Life Sucks', 'Pop Punk Fantasy' and 'I Don't Give A Fuck' (not to be confused with the Dua Lipa tune), which you can hear for yourself over in the Spotify link below:
While musicals and pop punk may seem like a jarring idea, the 'Great White Way' actually does have some history with the genre, with Green Day's American Idiot playing a succesful stage run back in 2010 and Panic! At The Disco's Brendon Urie appearing in Kinky Boots just last summer. Even rock musicals like the Tony award-winning Spring Awakening have taken some influence from pop punk in numbers like 'Totally Fucked' and 'The Bitch Of Living'.
