We can start with how she found her fame at just nine years old (yes nine!) when she appeared on Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition, a spin-off of Abby Lee Miller's Dance Moms and from then on the dance star rocketed into superstardom.

After gaining popularity on the show JoJo, with the help of her 'momanger', went on to launch JoJo Siwa into an international brand. From bows and hit songs like 'Boomerang', to TV shows and concerts, JoJo turned herself into a multi-million dollar enterprise.

But as an adult she's found herself in a fair few controversies, from being friends with disgraced YouTuber Colleen Ballinger to faking pregnancies and being accused of 'stealing' music, JoJo's time in the spotlight has been anything but quiet.

How old is JoJo Siwa?

After 12 years in the public eye, JoJo is currently 21 years old, soon to turn 22 as her birthday is May 19th! She is classed as Gen Z since she was born in 2003.

Who is JoJo Siwa's mum?

JoJo's mum is Jessalynn Siwa, a professional dance instructor from Iowa. Her father is Tom Siwa, a chiropractor from Nebraska who is of Polish descent.

The star has one sibling, an older brother named Jayden Siwa, who was previously also a vlogger but he now works as a real estate agent.

How is JoJo Siwa famous?

Like we mentioned above, JoJo first appeared in the public eye when she was just nine years old. The dancer appeared on Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition, a spin-off of Abby Lee Miller's Dance Moms, and she came fifth.

Then in 2018, JoJo officially made her debut as one of Abby's dancers on Dance Moms in season 5, episode 3, titled: 'JoJo with a Bow Bow'

During her time on the show, in May 2016 she released her songs 'Boomerang' and 'I Can Make U Dance'. 'Boomerang' was a massive hit with it's music video having amassed over 1 billion views and more than 5 million likes. That same year she released her infamous bows in collaboration with companies like Target, Walmart and Claires.

Despite being from America, JoJo's bows became a huge trend in UK primary schools and some even ended up banning the hair accessory.

When did JoJo Siwa leave Dance Moms?

It's understood that JoJo left Dance Moms towards the end of season 6, when she was 13, because she had signed a contract with TV giant Nickelodeon.

JoJo worked with Nickelodeon for around four years, creating show's like JoJo Siwa: My World, JoJo's Follow Your D.R.E.A.M and The JoJo and BowBow Show Show.

When did JoJo Siwa leave Nickelodeon?

JoJo's relationship with Nickelodeon ended in 2021, when she was 18, and she has claimed this was due to her coming out as gay that year. Appearing in Demi Lovato's documentary Child Star in 2024 JoJo spoke frankly about how Nickelodeon treated her after she came out on social media.

She alleged that the president of Nickelodeon called her directly and asked her: "What are we going to tell the kids?" and she replied: "That I’m happy?" He then allegedly told JoJo: "Well, you need to have a call with every retailer [that sells JoJo Siwa merch] and tell them that you’re not going crazy."

While Nickelodeon deny the claims, JoJo has said: "I basically got blackballed from the company."

What TV shows has JoJo Siwa been on?

Aside from her own TV shows, JoJo has appeared on a lot of TV shows including Dancing With The Stars where she was the first-ever contestant to be matched with a same sex partner in the show's history. JoJo and her dance partner Jenna Johnson placed 2nd.

JoJo was even on Keeping Up with the Kardashians in 2019 when Kim Kardashian brought her daughter North West over to JoJo's house which was every kids' dream back then.

Other shows of note include High School Musical: The Musical: The Series where JoJo guest starred as 'Madison', in 2023 she appeared on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars as a guest judge and the same year she appeared on Special Forces: World's Toughest Test.

In 2021, she launched Siwa's Dance Pop Revolution on Peacock and Prime Video where she and her mum formed the girl group "XOMG POP!". When did JoJo Siwa come out? Is JoJo Siwa gay?

JoJo announced she was a part of the LGBTQ+ community in an Instagram post in January 2021. The star broke the internet after sharing a photo of herself wearing a t-shirt that read: "Best gay cousin ever."

Since then JoJo has confirmed she identifies as lesbian after describing herself as pansexual for a while. Before she came out she dated musician Mark Bomtempo for three months. When they split she spoke highly about the relationship, telling Entertainment Tonight: "We had fun, we drove through Taco Bell, I think, 450 times. We had some really fun nights. We never actually had any hard times, we never fought, we never were mad at each other. It was honestly a great time."

JoJo then went on to date exclusively women including Kylie Prew, who she had an on and off relationship with, and TikToker Avery Cyrus who she had a pretty public split from.

She later dated So You Think You Can Dance? contestant Dakayla Wilson which was controversial as JoJo had been a judge on the show.
