Fashion's biggest night is finally upon us and this year's theme is set to be one of the most exciting and show-stopping yet. In case you don't know, every year the Met Gala has a theme that's influenced by the exhibition being shown at the museum. Guests aren't necessarily expected to adhere to the theme of the evening but if they wanna cement themselves in the Met Gala legacy, they better follow the dress code and follow it well. Case in point: Rihanna, who has become the face of the ball. She can slay any and all themes and this year will be no exception.
Over the past few years, the Met Gala has had some pretty wild themes: There was Alexander McQueen's 'Savage Beauty' in 2011, the infamous 'Punk: Chaos to Couture' in 2013, 'China Through The Looking Glass' in 2015, 'Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology' in 2016 and last year's theme 'The Art of the Inbetween' with an exhibition by Rei Kawakubo and Comme des Garçons.
This year, the theme is "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination".
So what types of red carpet looks can you imagine on the red carpet in 2018? There's a lot of different directions the designers can take this year's theme, exploring how fashion and religious art can co-exist. So you can probably expect a lot of stunning religious imagery inspired by the artwork at The Vatican or religious clothing, you can also expect some ethereal looks based on angels and *literal* heavenly bodies and, because what is the Met Gala without a little spice and controversy, you can probably expect at least ONE person to show up dressed as either a priest or a nun.
The best thing about the Met Gala is that there is no such thing as worst dressed on the red carpet... no matter what anyone says, no one is badly dressed. The night is all about pushing the boundaries of fashion - the riskier the better, the wilder the better. If you nail the theme, GREAT, extra marks for you! If you don't, you'll probably get turned into a meme and invited back next year to try again.
