Meghan Markle and Prince Harry memes go viral after they step back as 'senior royals'

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will be financially independent and divide their time between the UK and US.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have just announced that they're officially stepping down as senior members of the royal family and, of course, there are memes. As you know, the internet can make just about any piece of breaking news into memes (see: WWIII memes) and our favourite royals' statement was no exception.

Meghan and Harry made the unexpected announcement on Instagram on 8 January, only one day after making their first public appearance of 2020. "After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution," they wrote, alongside a photo from their engagement photocall.

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.

"We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.

"We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support."

As you probably know, Meghan has received a heap of disgusting and unwarranted abuse since entering the royal family. Meanwhile, Harry has been fighting for their right to have a private life, especially since the birth of their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

Apparently, the Queen wasn't informed about Meghan and Harry leaving the royal family either. She reportedly found out just like we did. And I oop-

"BBC understands that no other member of the Royal Family was consulted before Harry and Meghan issued their personal statement tonight, the Palace is understood to be disappointed," Jonny Dymond, Royal Correspondent for BBC News, tweeted.

Cue, even more memes about Meghan and Harry's boldness.

The Queen has now responded to Meghan and Harry stepping down, basically saying, 'Hold tf up – not so fast guys.'

"Discussion with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage," a statement from Buckingham Palace read. "We understand the desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."
