Maybe this article is a cake and we'll never know.
Meme Twitter has been busier than ever over the past four months, thanks to the disappearance of Chanel the African Grey parrot, Tiger King, the Sue Sylvester renaissance and Animal Crossing New Horizons.
Now, thanks to a viral compilation video about cakes, we have entered a new phase of the 2020 meme cycle. The completely ridiculous, existential crisis phase of the meme cycle, if you will. Friends, please welcome to the stage... Cake memes.
It all started when BuzzFeed's Tasty shared a video compilation of a series of cakes (made by @redrosecake_tubageckil) that all look like genuine household objects. Crocs, plant pots, toilet paper, a soap dispenser... you name it. But once cut into, they reveal themselves to be actual, edible cakes.

The video soon went viral, with people replying underneath with other various compilations of absolutely wild realistic cake designs, as well as attempting to cut into various objects, like a box of tissues, to see if they are in fact cakes...
From there, Twitter then descended into chaos. If these random objects are actually cakes in disguise, then what else could be a cake in disguise?
i have chained my roommate to the kitchen table. i will be cutting him open to see if he’s a cake. he says he isn’t, but that’s exactly something a cake would say https://t.co/DdBFYGmHVg
