The Take That star says he had become close to the X Factor contestant.
The X Factor judge Gary Barlow has said he feels "hugely disappointed" with Frankie Cocozza after the contestant was axed from the show.
The 19-year-old hopeful, who was being mentored by the Take That judge, was let go for "breaking competition rules".
In a statement issued to Capital FM, Gary said: "Frankie has apologised publicly as well as personally to me and the producers for his actions that lead to him leaving the show.
"I'm hugely disappointed that he's thrown away an opportunity like this after working so hard to get here."
He said that he was "sorry" to see Frankie go because "we've been through a lot together in such a short time".
Gary added: "I hope Frankie continues to look to me as a friend and supporter and works it all out, picks himself up and somehow tries to turn this into a positive."
Frankie had originally been well-received by the public and judges, but fell out of favour as the show unfolded due to his behaviour off set.
An X Factor spokesperson added: "He is going to take some time out before continuing his career as a singer. We wish him all the best for his future."
