"I was so naive about everything and about the industry"
Troye Sivan has opened up about his experience with sexual exploitation in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald.
In a wide-ranging interview, Troye is asked about the influence of the #MeToo movement in the music industry and reveals a disturbing story about when Troye first tried to break into the music industry.
Troye said he was targeted by a man for online sex who identified himself as a manager in the music business.
"I was so naive about everything and about the industry," Sivan said. "I had no idea how to check if someone was legit or not. [He] promised the world to me and then as we got closer just completely inappropriately, you know, started ... everything changed all of a sudden. It was super weird."
According to Sivan, the man took advantage of him over Skype, though he does not go into precise detail about what happened. Thankfully, Troye told his parents and contact between them ended. However, one day he ran into the man on the streets of Los Angeles. Troye says people have made inquiries about the man and heard similar stories.
Thank god Troye's parents stepped in and put a stop to whatever was happening. It's always important to remember that while the internet can be fun, there are some people out there who don't have the best intentions. If you need some tips on how to stay safe on the internet, head over here.
