Rihanna's domination is reflected throughout, including her much publicised telling off at the hands of a Northern Irish farmer in September.
This year also saw Rihanna kick off her record-breaking ten night residency at London's O2 Arena.
The star famously triggered hysteria ahead of her show at the venue when she arrived on the London Underground.
Another female artist who enjoyed a huge year in 2011 was Lady Gaga, whose second album 'Born This Way' was released in May and has since gone on to sell over eight million copies worldwide.
May also saw Cheryl Cole sacked as a judge on The X Factor USA – just twenty days after joining the panel.
The Girls Aloud star's misery was in stark contrast to Tulisa Contostavlos's joy later in the same month when she was confirmed as Cheryl's replacement on the UK edition of the programme.
In June, Beyonce followed in the footsteps of her husband Jay-Z and headlined the Glastonbury festival in Somerset.
The star's critically-acclaimed performance came just two months before she revealed that the couple were expecting their firs child together.
As the year came to an end, JLS and One Direction delighted fans in December when they formed a super-group to perform on The X Factor final at London's O2 Arena.
