The 'Little Things' singers reportedly like adopting online alter egos to chat with some of their fans.
One Direction stars Harry Styles and Niall Horan have reportedly started going undercover on Twitter to find out what their fans really think of them.
The 'Live While We're Young' singers have allegedly set up online aliases so they can chat to fans without them knowing they are actually talking to the boy band stars themselves.
"Harry and Niall like to get personal with their fans, but it's hard to talk one-on-one with them without being cyber-mobbed," a source told the Daily Star this week. "So in the last few months they've started using pseudonyms to befriend their fans on Twitter.
"They have no idea the strangers they're talking to are actually their idols," they explained. "The boys change their names every few weeks to prevent being rumbled."
"They find out what fans enjoy most at the gigs and which songs they like and don't like," the source revealed. "They say it helps them kill time as well when they're waiting in hotels and airports around the world."
They added: "He loves finding out what the fans really think."
Over the weekend One Direction picked up both awards they were nominated for at the MTV EMAs 2012, winning both Best New Act and Biggest Fans at the annual awards show.
One Direction released their brand new album 'Take Me Home' this week.
