The 'Gotta Be You' stars will take to the stage alongside the likes of Alicia Keys for the music event in September.
One Direction have revealed that they are really "looking forward" to their upcoming performance at the MTV Video Music Awards 2012.
The 'What Makes You Beautiful' singers will take to the stage at the Staples Center on 6th September for the industry event and want to "make a moment" after highlighting the many historical incidents over the years.
"We're really looking forward to the VMAs," singer Liam Payne told MTV News. "It's quite nerve-racking as well, because obviously there's been so many historical moments and stuff that have happened at the VMAs. Now we want to make a moment ourselves, but who knows?"
The band have made several high-profile TV appearances already this year including on the Today show in the US and the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.
"I think performing at the VMAs is such a huge occasion," continued Liam. "I think it ranks up there with one of the best performances we'll do so far."
Band mate Harry Styles admitted it was all thanks to the fans that they will be appearing and is dedicating their performance to the band's followers.
"It's a big occasion to perform at the VMAs, and we're here for our fans," he said. "So this one's for our fans."
Alicia Keys is the other performer already confirmed for the event and One Direction are also up for two awards on the night for Best New Artist and Best Pop Video.
Rihanna and Drake lead the nominations with five each including Video Of The Year for their collaborative effort on 'Take Care'.
