The 'Rocket Man' offers advice to the boy band on their two year anniversary together.
Sir Elton John has told One Direction to "enjoy" their huge success and be careful of who they hang out with.
The 'What Makes You Beautiful' stars have rocketed to fame since they appeared on The X Factor two years ago and the legendary musician said he was "thrilled" to see the group doing so well.
"If I had to give them advice I would say keep your original friends, keep good counsel with them," he confessed to The Sun. "Try not to get too carried away with the clubs and all that cr** - but it's very difficult, because I did."
He highlighted the increased media attention around band mates Harry Styles and Niall Horan and said he sympathised with the pair.
"Niall and Harry have now been in the paper a lot. I feel for them but I'm thrilled for them," he admitted. "They're also having a great time. Enjoy it, for f**** sake enjoy it. If you don't enjoy it then there's no point."
He added: "The thing is, it was just me. There are five of them together, they have each other to keep strong."
The band are currently celebrating two years together and have been taking to Twitter to thank their fans for their continued support.
Harry tweeted: " Can't believe yesterday was two years since we've been together. Thank you guys for everything you've done for us since then, We love you .x"
Zayn added: "Wow 2years, what an amazing journey and its all down to you guys. Thank you, sending my love to you all #2yearsof1d."
The band are currently working on their second studio album together and have teamed up with the likes of McFly and Ed Sheeran on tracks for the record.
