Lana Del Rey opens up about upcoming spoken word album
Lana Del Rey also brought up Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Cardi B and Kehlani in a statement about her new album.
Lana Del Rey is coming under fire for a controversial Instagram post in which she names Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj and Doja Cat.
Today (May 21), Lana Del Rey took to Instagram to clap back at accusations that her music glamorises abuse. She said: "I'm fed up with female writers and alt singers saying that I glamorise abuse when I'm just a glamorous person singing about the realities of what we are all seeing are now very prevalent emotionally abusive relationships all over the world."

However, Lana opened the statement by comparing herself to a group of female popstars and rappers, and people are calling her out for what she said about them.
Lana wrote: "Now that Doja Cat, Ariana, Camila, Cardi B, Kehlani and Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé have had number ones with songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, fucking, cheating etc - can I please go back to singing about being embodied, feeling beautiful by being in love even if the relationship is not perfect, or dancing for money - or whatever I want - without being crucified or saying that I'm glamorising abuse?"
Lana also revealed that she is releasing a new album on September 5th and said she will speak more about these topics on the project.
While it doesn't appear that Lana was critiquing any of these singers, people found it odd that she was comparing herself to a group of mainly black female artists who experience the music industry very differently than she does and don't benefit from her white privilege.
Writer Shon Faye tweeted: "think Lana’s post would have been fine if she hadn’t compared herself to a group of mostly black women with the clear tone that she thinks she’s been treated worse by the media when that’s observably untrue."
Another person wrote: "It’s SO corny of Lana to list all those women as if they don’t have to deal with hate for embracing their sexuality. Especially given how black women are constantly dragged no matter the genre."
People also criticised Lana because her last album, Norman Fucking Rockwell, was a critically acclaimed, No. 1 record and it was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys.

Lana could’ve made her point without name dropping the successful women she did. She did not have to compare her music to theirs. Let’s be real here, every artist she named gets mad backlash for the music they make. Lana’s whole post just seemed really bitter and ignorant to me pic.twitter.com/BrArK5hwio

Ain’t nobody stopping you from making your lounge music sweetie. Pls.
not lana mentioning beyonce and nicki as if they aren’t dragged on the daily for their seductive lyrics... acting like the gp is praising nicki and dissing her when it’s the opposite pic.twitter.com/iXr1LDw146

i love lana but naming beyonce as an artist who has songs abt being sexy and saying she (lana) writes about bad relationships and being submissive as woman etc is really stupid like the beyonce, the one who released LEMONADE an album about the sorrow of women in relationships??!? pic.twitter.com/fsWwPdn0H6

Beyoncé was threatened to get lynched because she dared to sing about police brutality, Ariana got death threats for the death of her boyfriend that she had no control over. Kehlani got death + rape threats for a breakup song. All the women Lana mentioned have been through hell.

She aimed her question to "the culture" and then proceeded to name black women specifically (and Ariana/Camilla) who make R&B, Hip Hop and Urban music.

Why is that? Why not Taylor? Billie? Adele? Gaga? Katy? Dua?... Why specifically the "urban" girls? https://t.co/PqGODKqIVI
As it stands, Lana is yet to respond to the backlash. We shall update you if she does.
