The song itself was written by Kesha, with Dr. Luke, Benny Blanco and Ammo, who also produced the song.

Kesha decided to write the song in the wake of news that bullying had led to multiple suicides in gay youths. 

Therefore, the message of the song is to encourage people to be themselves, and a celebration of anyone deemed to be quirky or eccentric.
