To be clear, Lorde is NOT going to jail but the internet is back at it again with the wild rumours and memes.

If you've been on the internet in the last few days, you might have seen a wild rumour that Lorde is going to jail and maybe even the tongue-in-cheek #FreeLorde hashtag. "Why is Lorde going to jail," you may be asking yourself. Well, for starters, she's not. But the internet's new favourite meme involves the famous Kiwi running afoul of a proposed policy in her native New Zealand, targeted at parents who let their kids leave school early.

The proposed policy could fine "the parents of young people who leave school early and don't go into education or training, up to $3000", according to the New Zealand Herald. But what does that have to do with Lorde?

Before making it big, Lorde was a student at Takapuna Grammar School and completed year 12. Her career trajectory ticked upward though, and the superstar chose not to return to finish her studies. We'd say that particular gamble paid off for the two-time Grammy winner.

Of course, Lorde isn't headed to jail but the internet's sense of humour is a truly mysterious force. #FreeLorde began trending after people pointed out how the proposed policy might have affected the singer.

People were already prepared to break Lorde out of jail.

The guards are shook tbh.

Prayers up 😞🙏
