Sticky and Sweet tour review
We went along to check out the first night of Madonna's latest world tour. Here's what we thought.
What was it like?
With tickets going for as much as £150 a pop, you expect a show and a half and Madonna certainly didn't disappoint. Hitting the big 5-0 the other week seems to have done nothing to diminish her energy and enthusiasm for performing, despite the fact that she was playing to a stadium which had more than just a few spare seats. As we've come to expect from the Queen of Pop, no expense was spared - from the stunning high definition screens to the vast array of stunning costumes and even a rather fancy motor which drove onto the stage, it was once again a masterclass in how to put on a pop concert.
What did she sing?
The setlist drew heavily from her recent No.1 album, Hard Candy , but there was also room for a few classics along the way too, including a rockier version of early hit Borderline, a modern twist on Vogue, which was mashed up with her own track 4 Minutes, plus a stunning acoustic rendition of 'You Must Love' from her critically-acclaimed movie, Evita.
What was the best bit?
Her performance of Hard Candy album track, Devil Wouldn't Recognise You was extremely powerful, with Madonna standing on top of a piano in a black hooded cloak while 'water' appeared to swirl around her on the screens. Into The Groove had everyone up dancing and saw Mrs Ritchie try her hand at a spot of pole dancing and skipping ('You sing while I jump rope!'). Her demeanour appeared much warmer than usual and, while interaction with the crowd was still minimal, she seemed a lot more playful on stage than we've seen in the past. She even asked fans if they had any requests, before launching into an impromptu burst of Express Yourself .
What was the worst bit?
The rock / electronica take on Human Nature was frankly, a musical disaster, but it was salvaged by an appearance on screen by none other than Miss Britney Spears who declared 'It's Britney bitch!' to the delight of a roaring Cardiff crowd. Another criticism was that the show recycled many elements from her recent promotional shows in support of the album, which lessened their impact to a certain extent. The limp version of recent single Give It 2 Me also made for a disappointing finale.
Where can I hear more?
The only London date of her Sticky and Sweet tour is at Wembley Stadium on September 11th. Tickets are still available so snap yours up now!
