The likes of One Direction, The Wanted and Beyonce are all also up for awards at this year's ceremony.
Rihanna, Drake and Katy Perry have emerged as the frontrunners for this year's MTV Video Music Awards with five nominations each for Rihanna and Drake and four for Katy Perry.
UK stars One Direction and The Wanted have also emerged with strong nominations while Beyonce and Coldplay are also in the running for several awards.
Bajan pop singer Rihanna is up for three awards for her music video for 'We Found Love', including Video Of The Year, Best Female Video and Best Pop Video, while her recent promo for 'Where Have You Been' picked up two technical nods for Best Choreography and Best Visual Effects.
Drake's Rihanna featuring hit 'Take Care' earned the Canadian rapper four nominations in categories for Video Of The Year, Best Male Video, Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography while his Lil Wayne collaboration 'HYFR' is up for Best Hip-Hop Video.
Fresh from promoting her 3D concert movie Part Of Me 3D Katy is up for Best Female Video for the film's titular track 'Part Of Me', while recent release 'Wide Awake' has been nominated for Video Of The year, Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects.

UK boy band One Direction's debut US hit 'What Makes You Beautiful' has helped them score nods for Best New Artist and Best Pop Video, while The Wanted's 'Glad You Came' also earned them a nomination in the former category.

Despite not releasing new material for several months after becoming a mother Beyonce still managed three nominations for her 'Love On Top' and 'Countdown' music videos, while Coldplay scored three nods for their music videos from 2011 album 'Mylo Xyloto'.
Jay-Z and Kanye West's rap collective Watch The Throne was nominated in three categories, while Justin Bieber's comeback single 'Boyfriend' is up for both Best Male Video and Best Pop Video.
Other stars to be nominated for the 2012 Video Music Awards include Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, M.I.A., Carly Rae Jepsen, Usher and Maroon 5.
The MTV Video Music Awards 2012 is due to take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on 6th September.
