The 'Diamonds' singer also explained her decision "not to hold back" on latest album 'Unapologetic'.
Rihanna has named recent single 'Diamonds' as one of her favourites since 'Umbrella' in a revealing interview with Complex magazine that sees her pay tribute to all seven of her past studio albums.
The 'Where Have You Been' singer is seen posing in seven separate covers for the publication's new issue, each art directed to reflect that album's original cover, while also opening up about her most recent record 'Unapologetic'.
"It was so inspiring and uplifting," Rihanna says of her 2012 single 'Diamonds'. "It was giving me hope, that song. I was tired of angry love songs.
"Love doesn't always have to be about break-ups and 'We're never going to be together again'," Rihanna explains. "It could be sweet. It could be, 'Hell yeah! We're diamonds!'"
The 'We Found Love' star goes on to claim she wanted to ensure her latest album 'Unapologetic' was "raw" and not to hold back in the songs featured on the record.
"When I was making this record I had no intention except the truth, so whatever is there is real. It's raw," Rihanna went on to say. "I held back before. I didn't show a lot of myself. I was very guarded.
"I needed to be open and free and fearless," she added.
